I am Tom Booth-Robinson. I suppose I am a singer-songwriter. However, I like to think of my sound as being different from the traditional Dylanesque sound that has defined the modern confessional ‘singer-songwriter’. I would describe my sound as being indie-folk with a dark edge. Indie, on account of the songs being acoustic versions of tracks I wrote when I was in indie bands. Folk, on account of the acoustic driven sound and my ever growing love and respect for traditional folk music. The additional dark edge refers to my love of dark sounding chords, melodies and lyrical content.
I started my musical life as a bass player, with a love for heavy metal. I developed my love for heavier music in various rock, metal and punk bands through the younger years of my life. This was until I discovered brit pop in the late nineties. Out went the thrash and in came the indie and love of all things in that era. I suppose both of my main musical passions helped to forge my current guise, as I strongly believe in the importance of both energy and melody.
The first acoustic seed was planted in my mind after my mum introduced me to an album by the ex lead singer of a punk metal band called Husker Du. ‘Workbook’ by Bob Mould was a major influence, not just for the wonderfully dark melodies and frantic acoustic strumming, but also for the simple thought of an ex punk doing something lighter.
Over the years, I admired the idea of solo acoustic from a distance, as I did not have enough confidence in my own voice and songwriting abilities. The real clincher was after leaving a band and discovering a succession of acoustic treasures. My first ever solo gig was at an open Mic night curated by my Dad. I knew it was right, as I was physically shaking before getting up, which a gig had not made me do that in a long time. I think I played 2 songs, one original and a David Gray song (if I remember correctly). Coming off stage, I don’t think I’d ever felt so good, it was just as good as my first gig ever. From there on in, I started playing numerous acoustic gigs in the regions and bettering my original material.

Marvelous, I like your production aesthetics, nice full sound, and your philosophy about it being about the music, I am considering a similar route, but thought it may sound too pretencious, but the way you describe it, it is just the opposite.
