Herising Inc. was started in 2005 to challenge prevalent ideas about lesbian women of color. Fed up with the lack of positive representation in the media and with the absence of a gay presence in urban publications, partners Maxanne Cheatham, 28, and Turquoise Toppin, 26, aimed to demonstrate the strong voice and buying power of the lesbian population, and in turn, solidify the well-deserved right to be appreciated by mainstream America.
The first venture of Herising Inc. is TOMBOYZ QUARTERLY MAGAZINE.
Tomboyz Quarterly is a publication committed to being a vehicle for readers to find compelling and informative themes focusing on the lifestyle and community of minority gay women. The magazine targets an audience no other publication caters to exclusively, and is innovative in relating to the specific needs of this niche market. In other words, TQ is simply Fresh! And this 'voice of the urban lesbian' has recently been making great noise in the LGBT community. Many people believe that minority lesbians have nothing to say. The groundbreaking Tomboyz Quarterly, the FIRST of it's kind, is proving them wrong.
The unique reader of Tomboyz Quarterly creates a distinct marketplace and promotes diversity through support of the lifestyle. The recent increase in awareness of gay culture in America has made it easier for women, as well as men, to embrace their sexuality. Now, these emerging alternative women are seeking entertainment that reflects their own lifestyle. Television shows like The L-word and Will & Grace, television personalities like Ellen Degeneres, and magazines like Curve and Advocate represent responses to that need. However, what is missing from those highly successful gay friendly entertainment outlets are faces of color.
