   About Tom Cook
My name is Tom Cook.I'm a singer/songwriter living in Bozeman Montana,a place I dearly love,a place that saved my life.I have some great friends here in Bozeman,4 of whom I play in a band with, uniquely called "The Tom Cook Band".Phil Savannah,Kevin Loustaunau,Dan Ruggles and Alaina Gordon are like family to me and I'm blessed to get to play music with them and to have them as friends. I was raised in Americas finest city,San Diego, home of one of the true loves of my life,The San Diego Chargers.I was raised by Americas finest parents,my two best friends Tom and Barb and I loved growing up in San Diego but am glad I don't live there now.Me and big city's just don't get along as well as we used to. I left San Diego many years ago and have lived in many places since.Clarksville Tn.(101st airborne baby)Tacoma Wa.,Phoenix Az.,Farmington NM,Grants Pass Or.,Denver Co. a couple of differant times,Nashville Tn.and my favorite place in all of the world,Naknek Alaska. I first started writing lyrics back in high school, real crazy heavy metal lyrics.I was a huge Judas Priest fan back then and still am for that matter.I don't remember very many of those lyrics anymore but I know they were pretty freaky, you know castles and dragons and that kind of stuff. Many years later while living in Phoenix and managing restaurants for a big national chain and basically hating my life,I attended a "Highwayman" concert and everything changed over night.I just knew that what Johnny Cash,Willie Nelson,Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings were laying down that night was something I would pursue for the rest of my life. Around that same time I became(and I'm not ashamed to admit it) a huge Garth Brooks fan.In June of 1995 I met Garth back stage in Denver and read him some of my lyrics. He was super nice to me and so I asked him for some advice. He said "do you play guitar" and I said "No" and he said "Well you need to learn if you really want to be a songwriter" and I said "O.K." The next day I bought my first guitar,a $200 Alvarez and played it until my fingers bled.I wish I could tell you that I was a natural on the geetar but if you've heard me play you would know thats not the case. While I love playing guitar,it is something that I struggle with and probably always will. Shortly after meeting Garth,Another huge step in what would be my songwriting path occured.I met a gal who remains one of my dearest friends in life,Dannyel Kafer, who took me to Alaska to work for her and her business partner,Shanti Rios, another dear friend for life. Not only did Alaska open my mind to many song ideas, but the most important thing ever took place. These two ladies introduced me to the music of two songwriters who have become my biggest heros,Mr. John Prine and Mr. Todd Snider.Another huge influence took place in Naknek as well. The music of local legends Wendy lee and Todd Hoppe along with Gary Hadfield.Watching them on stage lit a fire in me that I'm still chaseing. Now,my life has been a good one,but there were many dark periods in there as well. I use to struggle with substance abuse and it has caused many people who I love a great deal of pain. That is something I regret but for several years now I have been able to avoid that dilema with the help of a great power out there who I believe loves us all.Alot of the songs I write talk about those bad times as well as the good times I've enjoyed. I hope you'll give my songs a listen and I hope you'll find at least one that you enjoy.Peace and Love,Tom
