   About Tom Cook
Well,I was born a poor black child,Wait a minute, thats somebody elses story. I was actually born a middle class white boy in Long Beach California and was raised in Americas finest city,San Diego. Growing up there, life was just dandy. My parents are two of the finest people you'll ever meet and they paid for everything.I spent most of my youth at the beach pretending I knew how to surf, almost drowned one time at the clam in La Jolla, some puerto rican dude saved my life and I never even got his name. After being suspended from public school for smoking pot in class(If I'm lyin,I'm dyin) My folks went into crisis lock down and sent me to a catholic school. It was there that I'd realize that organized religion would never play a major role in my life and after 6 months and many, many parent, teacher meetings I was freed from the catholic school and relesed back into the public school system where I would excell and carry a high "D" average throughout 10-11th grades. At some point in there,my parents finally gave in and allowed me to take the G.E.D. and move on with my life.Man life was great!!I was 17 and free!! Then I turned 18 and found out about BILLS!! Have you ever seen what rent is in San Diego? Not pretty. I only lasted a few months and then decided "I'll just join the damn army, maybe they'll pay my bills". And they did!!For almost two years until they kicked me out for drinking too much, I thought thats what you were supposed to do in the army,I was wrong. At some point around this time, things got a little darker,I decided to try powder,I think it was probably coke the first time but whatever it was,I liked it and I did alot of it.I wish I could find something funny to say about the next twenty years but thats just not how it was. I bounced around the country trying to find a place where I could live and stay away from that shit, but it always seemed to find me.Phoenix,Denver,Farmington,etc.etc,Hell,I moved all the way to Alaska and I'll be damned if I didn't eventually get strung out up there. That's where I started to realize that this was probably something I couldn't kick on my own. The final straw was when I pissed all over my existence in Nashville Tn. I had gone there to chase my dreams of being a songwriter which I had begun doing back in Phoenix after seeing the Highwaymen perform. After two weeks in Nashville, living at a motel six,I was once again a mess and my guitar,Which some say you need to be a succesful songwriter, was sitting in one of Nashvilles many pawn shops. For the next two years, I floundered around Nashville, never once playing or writing any songs,It was the darkest hour for sure. Then one day I got a call from my brother,Paul Cunningham (we grew up next door to each other and he even married my sister,God rest her soul,) Paul had kinda taught me how to party back in the day and now he was telling me how he had found a way to stay clean and that I should move to Montana and give it a try.I got on a greyhound and have been living here ever since,Four years now and have never been happier. I go to some meetings where I learn things like how to not be selfish, how to pray to a God of my own understanding(He's a very loving and forgiving God)Much different then the one the Catholics told me would throw my ass in a big fiery lake if I didn't shape up.I also have learned that as long as I don't do that first one,I have a fighting chance. Now I've never been the best of students and I do things that make my friends down there a little nervous,But I don't put white shit in my system anymore and I have a 1500 dollar Taylor guitar which has never seen a pawn shop. It's a start and it just keeps getting better. I have a great set of friends here in Montana, three of whom I play in a band with and when I'm not playing,I sling drinks down at the Filling Station,The finest live music venue in Montana. Oh yea,I was married twice,Great ladies, both of them, Peace,Tom
