Australian Pianist and Composer, Tom Donald has established an important position in modern piano music. With roots in classic, jazz, folk, neo-classical, mimimalism & world styles, his piano improvisations and compositions have a distinctive voice.
Donald's full concert recitals of complete improvisation are relatively rare in today's jazz and contemporary music scene. He has given solo performances from Abbey Road Sound and Vision Event, The National Opera Studio, The Soho Review Bar, The Hackney Empire (supporting the likes of Pete Doherty) and Ronnie Scott's with Sirena Riley and Vocalist & BBC Radio presenter, Jumoke Fashola
Donald's takes the piano into an extended sound-world, with fiery, instinctive and deeply personal improvisations.
He has recorded and collaborated with Trinidad's Sitarist and musicologist, Sharda Patasar and U.K woodwind multi-instrumentalist Mark Buckingham. Donald has also recently collaborated British based Italian filmmaker, Haider Rashid for his latest film "Tangled Up In Blue".
Donald has performed on The BBC Asian network program Silver Street combining British Rock with Indian folk tunes, for 2008 episode of the program.
Donald recently worked with Iranian pianist & composer Shahram Khosheffat in producing a series of lectures on improvising with Iranian folk tunes on the piano. As a music educator, Donald's teaching methods attract an international audience in Central London on a weekly basis with a clarity that speaks to aspiring artists of all styles and persuasions. His "Harmony Method" is a revolutionary new approach to music education
He composed and produced U.S jazz vocalist, lyricist and presenter Sirena Riley's debut album, with a semi finalist award in the U.K song-writing competition for their song "Half Moon"
Jazzwise U.K has described Donald and Riley's song-writing partnership as "narcotic melancholic, flowing with invention", comparing it to the eclecticism of Nina Simone and Kurt Wiell.
Donald is one of the few artists today to extend the piano to a contemporary, worldly voice through improvisation, collaboration and composition.
Thanks Tom, always great good hearing from you and am so glad you let me know about your new posts. I've listened several times now to them both. Your live performance of Vincent is absolutely exquisite, and you're right about it having a Jarretesque (new word!) quality to it. And I love where your duet ventures with the wild piano and clarinet piece...
I'm happy to hear that you're continuing to enjoy Sangria... will definitely keep you posted when I've got new work to share.
Enjoying the wonderful new tracks you've posted Tom. Just finished listening to the one with sitar and clarinet... beautiful combination of instrumental timbres!
Hi I really like your music!! would you like to partecipate as a pianist to my project? Let me know my e-mail address is vagnini@libero.it Thank you Have a great day
Yeah. The nocturnal way of life takes its toll after a while. Digging "After". I kind of slipped off the reality bridge when i put it on...which is good thing. Ive been taking a leaf out of your book and doing recorded impros, making up fully working lyrics on the spot is darn hard but i think im nailing up something substantial on the wall of er...whatever...feels good eh.
