Tom Lempner, saxophone, completed his Masters of Music degree in 2005 (summa cum laude) at Kent State University as a Graduate Teaching Assistant under Chas Baker and Greg Banaszak. Additional formal studies include a double Bachelors degree in Music Performance and Music Therapy at the Conservatory of Music at Baldwin-Wallace College, and he also earned a diploma from the Armed Forces School of Music, Little Creek, VA. As an educator, Mr. Lempner currently serves on the music faculty at Western Reserve Academy and is a Music Therapist for PEP schools in Cleveland.
Tom has premiered the works of Cleveland composers Nicholas Underhill, Loris Chobanian, Jeffrey Quick, and Thomas Janson. His performances have been broadcasted on 90.3 WCPN FM radio, CBS channel 7, 104.9 WCLV FM, and the Hazel Chapman Show, as he has performed in Germany, including the Lake Kostanz Music Festival, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, and throughout the United States. He has recorded with Parousia Digital and Palmyra Music. Past engagements include performances with the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Stow Symphony Orchestra, the Revelation Saxophone Quartet, and as a concerto soloist with the Kent State Orchestra. Tom is a member of the Tom Lempner Group (jazz), Hermit Club Jazz Orchestra, Swing City Big Band, Gabriel’s Horns big band, and the jazz quintet Transportation Boulevard. Highlights of performance venues include Severance Hall, New York’s Lincoln Center, the Cleveland Bop Stop, the House of Blues, and the Cleveland Composer’s Guild. His accomplishments include Outstanding Soloist at Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Walter J. Watson Jazz Award, and KSU Concerto Competition Winner (Graduate Division).
Tom has performed with many local and nationally-recognized artists including: Noel Quintana, Eddie Baccus Sr., Ron Davis, Chas Baker, Paul Ferguson, Lew Del Gatto, Mike DiRubbo, Rich Shanklin, Bobby Selvaggio, Rich Goldstein, Bud Wattles, Greg Banaszak, Dave Thomas, Mitsuko Morikawa, and Shirley Cook.
