Bio
Contact: Tommy Adolfsson E-mail: t.adolfsson@comhem.se Phone: +46(0)705942386 The Artist: Conch blower Tommy Adolfsson is the only professional musician on conch shells in Sweden. 1984 he heard the music of conch shells in the temple of Mahabalipuram, India during a tour with the Swedish group, the Bitter Funeral Beer Band, playing at the Jazz Yatra Festival in Bombay and Delhi. --------------------------------------------------------------------The sound of the sea shells (conch) touched him deeply and since then he plays different kind of seashells from the Indian, Pacific, Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The symbolic and history of the seashell: Around the whole world you can hear people blowing into seashells. As fanfare at openings of ceremonies, like wedding ceremonies in Hawaii, at demonstrations against France test explosions in Muroroa, in shell orchestras in Haiti, at conch blowing festivals in Key West and at religious ceremonies in the temples in India, Sri Lanka and Tibet. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Symbolic: The whorls of the seashells symbolise new life, the master of the water, the voice of Buddha. The holy word Aum is created from the shank , Turbinella. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Shells for music, Conchhells: The Fanfare shell, Indian Chank, Turbinella pyrum, can be found in South India and Sri Lanka. It is the heaviest shell for their size in the world. Size: 13 cm and 4 kg. It has a strong, magic and penetrating sound. A smaller Indian Chank with a size of 10 cm has a more sacramental and melancholy sound and is very suggestive and touching. Australian trumpet, Syrinx Auranus, is the worlds largest gastropod. An apricot coloured giant with a size up to 75 cm and 12 kg. Tommy's is only 65 cm and 9 kg. Found in the north of Australia. The sound is very heavy and powerful. Giant Frog Shell, Tutufa bubo, is a fast and dramatic music shell. Size 17 cm. Found in the Indo - Pacific. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Strombus Gigas, a solid shell used as a trumpet in the Carribian Islands ---------------- Trumpet shell, Charonia Tritonis, used by the Greeks as a fanfar shell------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- He is born 1953 in Ljusdal, a small village in the north of Sweden. Tommy started as a young boy to practise the trumpet. Followed by experiments on hose-pipe, vacumcleaner-tubes and all kind of things you could blowon. Now he plays conch shells, trumpet, electric trumpet with electronic effects, water trumpet, nordic overtone flute, wooden cornet, Swedish woodhorn, Tibetan horn, hosepipe, water, glass and schamandrum. -------------------------------------------------------------------- He studied music at different music schools, by private teachers and in Africa, India, China, Indonesia, Tuva in Siberia and Europe. He has a vast knowledge about other cultures. During some years he studied development studies at Sussex university in England. -------------------------------------------------------------------- His music career as a musician: 2010 - Tenzing prize award - the County Administrative Board, Hagaparken - Karl Brothers consert - Materia Scandiform Showroom 2009 - Åmål Art Tracking - University of Agriculture - Salong Giraff, Vita Bergsparken - City Hall, 2008 - The Swedish Museum of Natural History - World library Stockholm 2007 - Making change Happen, Malmö Conferens of Sustainable City Development, Kunskapsdagarna, Malmö The Swedish Species Information Centre, Trondheim, Norway Conserts at The Coloni, Art project i Stockholm 2006 - work as Conch blower and trumpet player. do conserts and performances 2003 - 06 didn not play music because of problem with the cheeks, 1995 - 03 soloartist as conch blower, 1995 - 03 with the singer Chime Topgyal from Tibet living in Sweden, ---- 1990 + 94 The Swedish Radio jazzgroup P H Wallin and Roland Keijser, ---- 1986 - 98 with the South African poet Lefifi Tladi Ensemble, ---- 1980 - 87, Bitter Funeral Beer Band/Bengt Berger/Don Cherry. Sounds Like
A pulse from a conch loop slowly propels beautiful trumpet-like solos from three different-sized conch shells. Suggestive and beautiful sounds with a poetic and warm stream. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2027709653
