"This is an emergency crisis we're in. The entertainment media is affecting everything on the planet in a very negative way. I'm only interested in rock 'n' roll. Rock 'n' roll is a music that represents truth. Your TV channel has taken the word "rock" and knocked the "roll" off the end. You made rock this umbrella term for everything. That's wrong. Shakira isn't rock. These country artists with fur coats aren't rock - or country. I offered a video to VH1 of my band playing in the studio and they don't want to air it because it had musicians playing in it. They want some babe walking on the beach or whatever. I got turned onto this music by watching the Beatles and the Rolling Stones actually on TV playing their guitars. It completely took me over. When you can't see musicians playing any more, I'm not interested any more." - Tom Petty to VH1
There's something happening here. I like to think that Tommy and the Whale is a part of it. The music industry is in a bit of a scramble right now. It seems like it's getting harder and harder for them to control what we (the public) hear and listen to. It's making room for the music to speak for itself. It's making room for artists to be artists. It's making room for the music to matter again. Everything's moving... everything is changing.
Tommy and the Whale is an independent band. They are quite simply, a collective of great musicians playing great songs and taking those songs to as many people as possible.
In only a year and a half, Tommy and the Whale has managed to make their mark on the American music scene by sticking out like a sore thumb in their home-town of Nashville, TN. In a city of regurgitated pop-county-CCM-boy bands, Tommy and the Whale have fought back by simply being there and letting the music speak for itself. They have already established an impressive resume that includes shows with some of the "coolest" bands around these days. They can even claim the song, "Next Twenty Years" being used by Toyota in a new 2009 Toyota Corolla commercial. (www.constantcorolla.com)
The music feels something like Paul McCartney meets Spoon at a Jackson Browne concert and they have a conversation about what makes great pop music. I guess you just have to be there.
Have a listen, come out to a show, and think for yourself!!
