Deutschland am Anfang eines neuen Jahrtausends.Auf Berliner Flohmärkten sammelt sich das sozialistische Strandgut und vermittelt einen sentimentalen Blick auf die Zeit als es noch ein zweites Deutschland gab. Zwischen alten Amiga-Platten finden sich auch Alben des amerikanischen Countrysängers Dean Reed, dem unbekanntesten Superstar aller Zeiten, der im kalten Krieg zum sowjetischen Propagandamaskottchen avancierte und 1986 im Zeuthener See bei Berlin ums Leben kam.
Lange Zeit hatte man den Mann aus Colorado vergessen, aber seit Tom Hanks einen Spielfilm über den berühmtesten Amerikaner, der östlich der Mauer daheim war, angekündigt hat, ist seine Geschichte in aller Munde.
Dean Reed spielte in 18 Filmen mit, produzierte 13 LPs und gab Konzerte in 32 Ländern. Er protestierte international gegen Atomkraft, Militär Juntas oder den Krieg in Vietnam und gab Konzerte in Ländern wie dem Irak, Libanon, Nicaragua, Kuba oder Bangladesch.
Dean Reed lebte in Chile, Mexiko, Argentinien, Spanien und Italien und hatte Kontakte zu hochrangigen Oppositionellen in verschiedenen Ländern, KGB-Agenten und Politikern wie Salvador Allende, Daniel Ortega oder Yassir Arafat.
Obwohl er von den westlichen Medien ignoriert wurde, soll ihn ein Drittel der Menschheit dereinst für den größten Popstar der Welt gehalten haben.
1972 ließ sich Dean Reed in der DDR nieder, wo er mit offenen Armen empfangen wurde.
Dank seiner Staatsbürgerschaft genoß er die volle Reisefreiheit, pries aber in Interviews die Vorzüge der Mauer. Der Stasi galt er als zuverlässiger Informant und den obersten Strategen des Warschauer Paktes als Geschenk des Himmels.
Der gutaussehende Sonnyboy ehelichte seine Showbiz-Kollegin Renate Blume. Das Paar verlieh dem DDR-Alltag einen Hauch von Glamour. Er gab bei "Ein Kessel Buntes" den Einheizer und drehte eine Reihe von Filmen für die Defa.
Bei keinen anderen Weltstar verliefen die Grenzen zwischen Pop und Propaganda so fließend. Dean Reed ließ sich als Cowboy feiern, der für das Gute in den Kampf ritt,aber stets brav zurück in den Osten kehrte.
Sein Erfolg in den Siebzigern und sein späteres Scheitern an den eigenen Ansprüchen steht stellvertretend für das Scheitern der DDR-Kulturpropaganda und einer staatlichen Popkultur, die jungen Menschen hinter dem eisernen Vorhang einen Hauch von weiter Welt vermitteln sollte.
Der seltsame Tod von Dean Reed markierte den Anfang vom Ende einer Kulturpolitik, die nur von Placebo-Künstlern getragen wurde. Sein Selbstmord wurde von Erich Honecker persönlich als Unfall vertuscht um die eine Legende zu erhalten, die bis in die Gegenwart fortwirkt. Der Mythos Dean Reed suggerierte aber, daß sein Tod kein Zufall gewesen sein konnte. Widersprüchliche Aussagen und Verschwörungstheorien ließen zusätzlich den Verdacht aufkommen, daß der Mann aus Colorado nicht einfach nur ein naiver Schlagersänger zwischen den Fronten des kalten Krieges gewesen war.
"Der Rote Elvis" entwickelt sich von der pophistorischen Recherche zur Spionagegeschichte und geht den zahlreichen Gerüchten nach, die sich um Dean Reed ranken. In Interviewausschnitten kommen Verwandte, Freunde, Kollegen, Fans und ehemalige Mitarbeiter hochrangiger Abteilungen der letzten DDR-Regierung zu Wort um ein realistisches Bild von Dean Reed zu zeichnen und seinen Erfolg zu erklären.

StErn, wie ihn nur Freunde nennen, die er in den schmuddeligen Umkleideraeumen der Rockclubs dieser Welt getroffen hat, beschaeftigt sich u. a. mit Raketentechnik, schwarzer Magie und verrueckten Wissenschaften.
Hat in grauer Vorzeit mal ein Heft namens "Gags & Gore" betrieben und war auch am sensationellen Erfolg von Edition Panel nicht unbeteiligt. Er hat zwei Bücher veröffentlicht und eins übersetzt (siehe unten), an diversen coolen Filmen mitgearbeitet, wohnt in Kreuzberg und arbeitet zur Zeit an diversen Jahrhundert-Romanen.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Tiravanija’s documentary film provides a perspective on the art of the 1990s through interviews with artists, including those participating in the exhibition.

Working independently or in various collaborative constellations, they eschewed the individual object in favor of the exhibition environment as a dynamic arena, ever expanding its physical and temporal parameters. Using the museum as a springboard for work that reaches beyond the visual arts, their work often commingles with other disciplines such as architecture, design, and theater, engaging directly with the vicissitudes of everyday life to offer subtle moments of transformation. This loose affiliation of artists, each of whom now boasts strong, independent careers, periodically and randomly joins forces to create a variety of projects. The Guggenheim Museum has extended an invitation to a core group of these artists—Angela Bulloch, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, and Rirkrit Tiravanija—to collectively formulate a scenario for an exhibition, one that will reflect and articulate the unique nature of their practices. Organized by the museum’s Chief Curator, Nancy Spector, in close collaboration with the artists, the exhibition will present a genealogy of their shared history through site-specific installations of new, often self-reflexive works created on the occasion of this project."

Description:
Horror films are pornographic and eroticise the abject. Yet, they relieve, they are humorous and challenge cultural taboos. “Science Of Horror” is the first documentary to analyze horror film from the perspective of feminist film critique. Carol Clover discovers the final girl in “Texas Chainsaw Masscare”, an androgynous but clearly feminine hero. Therewith, Clover delivers an essential formula of the genre and the foundation for further assumptions. Women are horror’s favourite victims but also its heroes. The phallus, indicator of social power, becomes a flexible object in horror: The chainsaw in the final girl’s hands allows a different look on the cultural norms of Western societies – the genre undermines heterosexual attribution. It is with that theory in mind, that Judith Halberstam develops a queer reading of the genre and illustrates along the “Chucky” series how explicitly sexuality runs through horror and which sexual vicissitudes the genre offers. Those theoretic assumptions are proven with citations from well-known horror films and confronted with statements of renowned filmmakers. Thus, the documentary is the first to lead a discourse between film theory and film practice. Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Tom Savini comment on their films and their fans. Bruce Campbell explains why he depicts a male victim in the “Evil Dead” movies. Joe Hill criticizes torture porn because of its shallowness, whereas Neil Marshall elucidates why “The Descent” consciously plays with audience’s expectations. The documentary concludes that there is more to the genre than the sum of its effects. Horror is utterly unique.

In this context, The Overhose event will showcase the new upcoming designers which continue this tradition by providing a radical view on fashionart, which delimits itself of the ordinary commercial productions.

Normalerweise basteln sie Beats für Künstler wie Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah oder 50 Cent, am 10.07.09 tun sie es auch für euch. Die zwei Revolutionäre des "Live- Produzierens "sind zu Gast im Dot Club im Herzen Berlins. DJ Exile und DJ DAY aus Kalifornien/USA rücken an mit 2 MPCs und 2 Plattenspielern, bearbeiten alte Klassiker und entwickeln die Hits von Morgen. Jeder Song fließt, wie bei einem DJ Set ineinander.
