Hailing from the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of southern Virginia, singer/ song writer Tommy Edwards sows a quilt of American roots music that is uniquely his own, spinning tales of a modern troubadour facing changing times and a culture in need of a voice. In the summer of 2003, a high speed skateboarding accident resulted in a head injury that nearly ended Tommy’s life, led to mental illness, the loss of his business, and a life on the streets. Tommy’s story moves from hometown hero to homeless addict to reinvention, recovery, and rediscovery of life.
Tommy has fronted a number of fusion based ensembles, incorporating a wide variety of instrumentation and stylistic license. His travels have taken him to 47 states and three countries, working with major recording artists, world class musicians, and recently as a member of the World International Blue Grass Band. His influences of blues, blue grass, folk, western, rock, and country have created a sound that is Uniquely Americana.
We must look forward to address mounting mental health and wellbeing issues as the pace of life accelerates into the twenty first century. The combination of rapidly advancing technology, population growth, and expanded world economy create a need for development of a means of daily decompressions. As community programs and activities for youth and adult disappear, communities become more fragmented and people become increasingly isolated.
I've moved to Virginia to establish The Heart of Virginia campaign in response to the events that transpired on the campus of Virginia Tech the morning of April 16th 2007. Through song and open discussion, I hope to help de-stigmatize mental illness and capaign for forward thinking programs that will help revitalize communities from within.
