About me:
Deep within the underground of the Hamilton Electronic Music Scene of the early 1990's, Tommy Gunners began experimenting and then mastering the DJ art of Cutting, Scratching and Mixing. Not content with the limitations that others put upon themselves, Gunners was soon melting music and mixing melodies together in all of its genres. Techno, Acid, House, Electro, and his greatest love, the Breakbeat.
Inspired by the likes of Hawtinand Cox, Dj Domink, Czech and Dj Dan, Tommy settled into a style that fused techno and acid house with a unique technique, skills that turned him into a true urban technician. In 2001 Tommy added breaks to his diverse collection which soon progressed into his strongest passion and preference, as the broken beat sound pushed him into hyperdrive. Tech-tonique was born, a name that captured his history, his sound, and was the perfect fusion of the beats he represented.
Under this BackBreakers moniker, Tommy found himself gracing the decks at Fever Nightclub in Hamilton. Back 2 Back mayham with none other than Jonny Mack aka Funknstyle for the Christmas Born Again party with Out of Hand. Gunners exploded his Sound on an unsuspecting crowd, dancing through his breaks from record to record, and the crowd went off fueled by his energy. Funknstyle stepped up to the challenge for his first set at Fever and unleashed a funk fury to compliment Tommy's tough technical sound. Gunners was an instant success at Fever Fridays and gained the respect of many djs, promoters, and fans alike in no time at all. Both Tommy Gunners and Funknstyle became Fever Fridays biggest newcomers to blowup in 2002.
Remaining with the Backbreakers crew, it wasn't long before Gunners was performing at the larger events such as our 3 year Anniversary party with Renaissance and Slinky UK dubbed "Sensation". That night Gunners found himself billed alongside the don of breakbeats Rennie Pilgrem, Canada's #1 breakbeat jedi Andrew Spence, plus a host of other heavyweight producers and djs: Pandora, Dave Seaman, Jon the Dentist, Lee Mullan of Hybrid, Jelo, Chris Anderson, Dave Saddler, and Resident Soundboy.
Above all it was his friendly and good natured soul, his energy and passion of breaks, and his unique vision of variant sound, that guaranteed him top honours on the Dose/Backbreaekrs stage at Ontario's infamous 3 day World Electronic Music Festival in Bobcaygeon playing with a couple of the biggest and most influential breaks names in the world, superstars DJ Hyper and Simply Jeff. Being billed at the most important event of the year led to his opening set for Deep Dish and into the Goldclub Series which attracted the attention of Nocturnal Magazine.
In 2003 Tommy joined the ranks of Nocturnalmagazine.net as the Resident Breaks Ambassador and Music Columnist, and there he remains today with years of music evolution and progression to show for it. Presently Gunners still continues to gain speed in the electronic music industry having transplanted himself into Toronto and its larger opportunities. His run with Nocturnal has taken him to the top playing at some of Toronto's biggest events and alongside not only breakbeat heavyweights, but also two of House Music's biggest names: Erick Morillo and DJ Dan.
Not content with just mastering the dj arts, Gunners is moving fast and a new mission has started in music production. Intent on mastering sound his aim is to break boundaries and create a new era of hybridized beats. Ready for the Backbreakers Newstyle and the rise of Social Science Music for 2007, Gunners knows how it should sound and how it has to be played...
