I grew up in Nashville
.
My
father Tommy Hill Sr., (member of the Rockabilly Hall of
Fame), was a songwriter and an independent record producer, who worked with the Starday, Stop, and Gusto record labels. This gave me the
opportunity to work as a studio rhythm guitarist on sessions with country
greats like Red Sovine, Little Jimmy Dickens, Del
Reeves, Dottie West, The Coasters, and Johnny Bush, just to name a few. I took
off on my own, working the Holiday Inn and Ramada Inn circuit with various
bands, playing Top 40 rock and roll. I had an original song cut by The Coasters
and another song released in Canada.
Also, I am
very proud of my uncle,
Carl
Smith , for being elected to the
Country Music Hall of Fame. He was married to my beautiful aunt, Goldie Hill, a
Decca Recording artist in her own right.
In June of 2007, I started working on my own classic country CD of songs from my heroes in country
musc; Hank Thompson, Roger Miller, Ray Price, and more. I had some really
good musicians to work with me on this CD and I’m very proud of how things
turned out. This CD is called, My Roots Are
Showing , and is in honor of the great music I grew up with as a kid in Nashville.
In late Jan 2007, I finished working on a rockabilly solo CD called,
Rough Mix
It includes 7 of my own songs that I’d written in the boogie/swing/country vein and also includes a few other tunes that have special meaning for me (meaning I didn’t have enough original songs to fill the CD....heh). I hope you find something on it that you like. From the fall of 2005 to the summer of 2006, I really had fun playing boogie
piano with Atomic Boogie in Atlanta, a Rockabilly, Jump Blues, Swing Band. Good guys, good people, and a fun time band.
In 2002, I really had a yearning for
country music and completed work on a CD of classic country songs called, It’s
My Nickel In The Jukebox , where I played all the instruments and
vocals. After a break, and trying to play other music that wasn’t in my
heart, I finished my second country CD called, No
Place Like Home
