At the age of 4 Thomas McCullough was sent to an orphant home after his father tryed for the 5th time to kill him while drunk. Thomas had already lost
4 brothers and 2 sisters this way.Thomas was born in the summer of love but
not for him and by age 6 in a hell called an orphan home Thomas was looking for a friend in this world that knew how he felt so at Christmas he ask his sponser for a radio and sure enough he got a clock radio and it seemed like the world had opened up to him and he found his first friend that shared his feelings, his name was Jonny Cash and then a guy named Merl Haggard, Thomas says he recalls that he no longer felt alone in this world. His life changed at age 8 when a preacher in church said that we are all given a talent and Thomas had been writing a short story and he knew this must be what God had in mind for him to excape his real life horror. In 1979 Thomas moved back to Nashville after his fathers death but soon lost himself in the drug sean in the Casy homes projects, he lasted about 8 mounths before the orphant home brought him back and then told him he was no longer wanted by them or anyone so they sent him off to a children's correction center where he stood out like a sore thumb and everyone would ask what's a straight laced boy like you doing here. Well This is where Thomas had his first tast of being a part of making music when a man named Chet Atkins came to perform at a dance and after the dance Thomas was ask to help edit on a reel to reel pro studio that was only allowed to be used by staff and guest.
Mr.Atkins gave Thomas some great life advice and introduced him to a man named Owned Bradley and their advice has worked to this day.
Well to make a long story short Thomas was adopted at 16 then changed his name to Tommy Southard and started writing more and finished his first book but his passion for music took him to Nashville every weekend to hear the songwriters mostly at Douglas Corner Cafe untill one night while at a stake house Tommy Southard was telling a man Named Harlin Howard about his book and Mr. Howard was not impressed at all and told him "I'll tell you something young man when you can write a book in 3 1/2 minutes then you can bragg and call yourself a writer". Well Tommy found out that this man was a very successfull songwriter and that he loved to hang out at the steak house where he had met him and picked his brain as much as possable but Mr. Howard told Tommy that he needed to find his own way and keep going to Douglas Corner Cafe and listen and learn and so Tommy did and made a great friend out of the owner of the songwriiter club and soon made friends with Nashvilles biggest hit writers such as Townes Van Zandt and walter Hiatt and learned alot from them. So if your a songwriter here's some words of wisdom from someone who has been there, go to where the songwriters are and listen and learn and please never walk up to a stranger and ask them to write with you because Tommy says he's seen people do this and it's like asking a stranger if you can come over for lunch, do you see what he means and GOD BLESS THE DREAMERS !!!
