Tomorrow Music Orchestra is a group of composers and musicians who
are experimenting with the idea that music’s really fun while exploring its ability to relate to a wide-ranging audience. TMO was
initially conceived by bassist and composer Matthew Golombisky in 2003 in New Orleans and
played an attention-getting concert at Cafe Brasil, including William Thompson (Fender rhodes), Milton Villarrubia and Quin Kirchner (drums), two saxophones, violin, clarinet, guitar, trumpet, electric and acoustic basses. After Hurricane Katrina, Golombisky, along with drummer Quin Kirchner and vibraphonist Matthew McClimon, eventually moved to Chicago.
But the urge to create something larger was evident. He wanted to have something that would allow them to compose even bigger and more involved works? So he met violin/violist Hanna Mathey one night after a Lucky 7s concert at the Hungry Brain. She had a cellist friend, Katy Myers. The stage was almost set. Golombisky remembered a great composer and trombonist he met while studying at Northwestern in the Fall of 2005, Jonathon Kirk. So this new line up included, violin, cello, vibes, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass and drums. Currently TMO includes flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, soprano, alto, tenor, bari and bass saxophones, French horn, vibes, oboe, accordian, piano, and additional bassist, Doug Johnson.
Now they needed music for the Ice Factory gig. Golombisky spent 14 hours composing on March 17th. Our first meeting, our first rehearsal, and our first gig was on March 18th. So, Matthew brought together nine musicians in his apartment for some hours, saying hello, nice to meet you and learning new music. "It’s something to try. For today, at least.", originally composed for the Lucky 7s, was rearranged for TMO. A brand new piece "After Sleeping and Forgetting." was composed and quickly learned. Matthew McClimon rearranged "Pangu", a piece he wrote a few years ago for new orleans-based group, Red Shift. James Davis brought his "A Little Couch Music" sketch, and we got to work.
Then they went to the gig and played. And it was a lot of fun. Since that initial jolt of excitement, Tomorrow Music Orchestra has had a life of newly composed music, written by its members, and performed by a group of great musicians and people.
thanks heaps for the Add-- please keep me apprised of your upcoming concerts. Doug says you're playing at Around the Coyote...? or am I confusing this with someone/-thing else....? At any rate, if i find out when/where you'll be playing next & in the future, you can count on me being there; as Doug describes it, your work is fun, smart, & Not To Be Missed. If you have an email list or listserve or something, I'd be eager to sign onto to: just drop me a MySpace message and I'll return a message with my email address.... ~merry music mayhem making, --michael

HEY EVERYBODY!!!! On April 28 Chicago will get a little more wild!!! That is when I am returning to Chicago for good. I see that there are more clarinet players..I hope there is still room to cram me somewhere in the ensemble. I also play E-flat more commonly known as the death stick! I simply must be included...I have also started to play steel pans. Just letting you know that we have options. Get Ready!
