~~~~~~~History~~~~~~~~
The Tompkinsville Jaycees began in 1978 when the original 20 charter members got together to make a difference in their community. Some of these members were, Ken Johnson, Richard Walden, Lewis Lee Carter, Larry McPherson, Ricky Ross, Freddie Tooley, Roger Deckard, Jimmy Garmon and others with Darrell Bartley becoming the first President of the Tompkinsville Jaycees. At this time, women were not allowed to join this men’s only organization.
In the early 80’s, the National Jaycee organization voted to establish a women’s club known as the Jayceettes. Together with the Jaycees, they held numerous events for the community such as the Christmas Parade and Expo, Haunted House, WW1 Veterans Recognition Ceremony and had a Jaycee softball team that travel the state and played against other chapter’s teams. They made ornaments and sang carols for the nursing home patients. They conducted softball tournaments and ran Governmental Affairs programs. They also funded and built the tennis courts at Tompkinsville City Park. In 1980 the Tompkinsville Jaycees along with the Monroe County Arts Council started a little event called the Monroe County Watermelon Festival and in 1985 the Tompkinsville Jaycees took over the management of the Monroe County Fair. These two events are now the largest events held in Monroe County.
