"This is a live album from an extraordinarily original fingerstyle
guitar/banjo player who is closer to Kottke than Hedges, but again very
original. Taken from various shows it excludes the quirky stories Tom is
known for, but does capture some of the intensities of his live playing."

"One of the more interesting and talented acoustic
guitarists in Nashville" Nashville City Paper
“Musical Pictures is one of only a handful of albums
that invite me to forget who I am and get lost in Tom Smith's creative
vision” Tuck Andress - Tuck & Patti
Tom's Music is Innovative -- Amazing Style With Guitar and Banjo -- Music that communicates with today's generation and those to come. It Speaks! The way Tom plays, makes the guitar sound like a voice -- very progressive!
.."American Guitar," the Italian author and composer Maurizio Angeletti said that Tom is "completely free from the barriers of commercial music...the playing is, and couldn't be other that a reflection about life, and the conceptual transcription of it into music..."
Tom tends to call it "Contemporary Guitar." It could as easily be called "Neo-Impressionism," "Real Interesting," or just plain "Good Guitar Playing" judging from comments made by members of his audiences.
"Experimental Acoustic" seems to work just fine, too.
Nashville's "The City Paper" has described Tom as "One of the nation's premier guitarists...[his] playing has been ranked right alongside that of such acoustic masters as Leo Kottke and John Fahey...".
Tom is a contemporary of and has played with, Tuck and Patti and Michael Hedges among many others. In their early days in Palo Alto, Tom, Michael and Tuck learned from each other as well as played the same stages. Hear Tom tell a Provo audience a story about having tuning wars with Hedges - http://www.TomSmithGuitar.com/liveclips.html
Since he began playing in 1966, Tom has performed in 30 states and three countries. His musical career has taken him from coffee houses in North Carolina and bars in San Francisco to concert halls and festival audiences of 10,000. He has done PBS shows, and shared the stage with such artists as John Hammond Jr., Odetta, Livingston Taylor, Melanie, Tuck and Patti, Michael Hedges, Robin Ford, Dave Van Ronk, Jesse Winchester, John Fahey and Todd Phillips. He has five records, "Still Lifes," "Musical Pictures," "On Any Given Night," Little Dog," and "Juliet's Window" out on Lone Oak Records.
Tom is currently working on his newest project, "Letters from Dawn," which he considers his best work so far.
While there are similarities to and influences from these legends, you'll find Tom is a master in his own right.
Tom's performances take audiences on a creative tour through the world of their own imagination. From dancing leprechauns and rose-scented evenings in Spain, to images perhaps darker and more mysterious, Tom uses his guitar, banjo and anecdotes to paint musical pictures for his listeners' enjoyment. Tom has a style all his own. This style shows the influences of Jazz, Country, Classical, Blues as well as other contemporary guitarists. While existing clearly in a universe unique onto itself, his music is increasingly being enjoyed by audiences worldwide.
Dear Tom, Just back from a weeks vacation on the coast. Beautiful Indian Reservation with beaches that dazzle and shine. Great food eaten outdoors each day, great company, music, the roar of the ocean, soft sand and of course some friendly axe throwing competitions. You've been busy and having great fun! I'm so happy for you. Off to mow the yard. Headed back to work tomorrow :( Love to you, from me, Mr. Fly
In the process of re-doing my page, I got phised and locked out of my account,I did'nt get to my "privacy"settings fast enough..so I'm starting again.sometimes it';s hard being blonde LOL,It's good to have you back..susan

Dear Tom, I hope this note finds you well! It has been way too long and I am sorry! I am learning the guitar now and can play the opening to Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Thanks to my son. He is a good teacher. I still love my Dulcimer but in my hands it is limited. I feel sorry for it. I know it should be able to do all kinds of magical things. I have been doing a lot of axe and knife throwing lately. Oh how my arms ache but it is so worth it. We had a wonderful Independence Day party and there was a huge fireworks display at the beach which could be seen from the yard after dark. Lovely! In a few days I am off for a week to the coast where we stay in cabins on the beach. I am thrilled to be going on vacation. Love to you my friend and let me know what you are working on. I let my dad borrow your CD's and he loved them.
