A common bird of forest and feeders in the eastern United States, the Tufted Titmouse is often seen foraging in groups with other birds. It is quick to scold predators and is easily attracted to the mobbing calls of other species.
Music
Titmice are social birds and, especially in winter, join with small mixed flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, kinglets, creepers, and the smaller woodpeckers. Although a frequent visitor at feeders, the titmouse is not as tame or confiding as a chickadee. It often clings to the bark of trees and turns upside down to pick spiders and insects from the underside of a twig or leaf. The Black-crested Titmouse of Texas and Oklahoma was recently considered a subspecies of Tufted Titmouse.

Origin: OE. Titemose, titmase; tit small, or a small bird + AS. Mase a kind of small bird; akin to D. Mees a titmouse, G. Meise, OHG. Meisa, Icel. Meisingr. The English form has been influenced by the unrelated word mouse. Cf. Tit a small bird.
Any one of numerous species of small insectivorous singing birds belonging to Parus and allied genera; called also tit, and tomtit.
The blue titmouse (Parus coeruleus), the marsh titmouse (P. Palustris), the crested titmouse (P. Cristatus), the great titmouse (P. Major), and the long tailed titmouse (aegithalos caudatus), are the best-known European species. See Chickadee.

YOU CAN ATTRACT THE TITMOUSE TO YOUR BACKYARD BY:
1. Planting seed and nut bearing trees such as evergreens, beechnut and oak.
2. Plant berry producing bushes such as elderberry and bayberries.
3. The Titmouse will be a frequent visitor to your feeders in the winter. Provide a feeding station with a hopper feeder and plenty of perching space. Since Titmice are agile birds, consider a stainless steel peanut or sunflower feeder. Fill it with peanut kernels or black oil sunflower seed.
4. Place out a platform feeder and fill it with peanut kernels, grapes, apples or berries.
5. Offer a suet feeder placed near the trunk of a tree.
6. Smear peanut butter onto tree trunks and branches.
7. Offer a source of water for drinking and bathing.
About me: These birds have grey upperparts and white underparts with a white face, a grey crest, a dark forehead and a short stout bill; they have rust-coloured flanks. The Black-crested Titmouse, which is found in central and southern Texas and was considered to be a subspecies of this bird, is now considered a separate species.
Their breeding habitat is deciduous and mixed woods in southeastern Canada and the eastern United States. They nest in a hole in a tree, either a natural cavity or sometimes an old woodpecker nest. They line the nest with soft materials, sometimes plucking hair from a live animal such as a dog. Sometimes, a bird born the year before remains to help its parents raise the next year's young. The pair may remain together and defend their territory year-round.
These birds are permanent residents and often join small mixed flocks in winter.
They forage actively on branches, sometimes on the ground, mainly eating insects, especially caterpillars, but also seeds, nuts and berries. They will store food for later use.
The song is usually described as a whistled peter-peter-peter. They make a variety of different sounds, most having a similar tone quality.
This bird's range is expanding northwards, possibly with the increased availability of food at bird feeders.
Christmas Bird Count show that the Tufted Titmouse has expanded steadily northwards in the 20th Century. The animated map includes all sightings of Tufted Titmice during Christmas Bird Counts in 10-year intervals, starting from 1901 to the present. Project Feederwatch results showing the range of Tufted Titmouse in 1995. @
