SOL_1.Synfonie was composed 2000 with Cubasis and is Tom..s most ambitious work for computer music. Recorded live on stage on two occasions: at Postfuhramt Festival Berlin June 2000 (tracks 1 and 4) and at Bahnhof Gusow July 2000 (tracks 2+3). Cubasis was edited live on stage! Haltestellen/Loops are basis for improvisations on Kendang (1+4) and Waterphone (2+3). Total length 48 minutes.
This big composition features long excerpts from compositions by my teacher Gutama Soegijo written for new gamelan percussion ensemble in the 1980s. The first movement also contains a humble cover version of Soft Machine..s Noisette.

Avant-garde Music

since 1993

Solo Works and Collaborations until 2007

I studied Ethnomusicology at Berlins Free University and Javanese GAMELAN as well as innovative new techniques for percussion instruments with Indonesian composer and musician extraordinaire Gutama Soegijo and the BANJAR GRUPPE Berlin, one of the most intriguing avant-garde Schlagwerk-Ensemble in Europe (1978-1994).

Numerous concerts at national, European and international Gamelan and Percussion festivals highlighted by our appearance at the First International Gamelan Festival during the 1986 World Exhibition EXPO in Vancouver/CAN as only orchestra being invited from Europe.

Below an image from Banjar Gruppe Berlin in Vancouver Aug 1986: I am the one on the left...

Gamelan-2a 75prozent.jpg

On stage with free improvised music since 1976. Own compositions since 1993.

1987-89 Music for BUTOH dance theatre with TATOEBA - theatre danse grotesque aka Yumiko Yoshioka, Minako Seki and Delta RAi in Berlin

1994 with drum n bass formation WYRDSPHERE in Brighton/UK

1995 with art rock band SALAMAND in Berlin

2002-2005 with saxophonist/flutist Geoff Leigh of Henry Cow -fame as MEN WORKING OVERHEAD

2006/7 Collaboration with Bob Rutmans STEEL CELLO ENSEMBLE

2007 with French bass player/cellist Benoît Delaune formerly of French avant-prog band La Société des Timides à la Parade des Oiseaux (La STPO) from Rennes

1997-2007 I was mastermind of GHETTO RAGA, one of Berlins most original free improvising outfits which sadly disbandoned early 2007.

Since 2000 with performer/dancer/vocalist Elke Postler as SYNTRON

I am worldwide one of the few soloists on the WATERPHONE. Since 1987 I play a prototype Waterphone built 1974 by its inventor Richard Waters.

One Hour with The Steel Cello Ensemble 2006 / 2 tracks

recorded live in Berlin at Supamolly May 26 2006 and at b-flat Jun 6 2006.
Bob Rutman - Steel Cello, Buzz Chime / Tom Zunk - Waterphone, drums / Ulf Hartwig - Steel Cello / Jeff Funt - Steel Cello, vox

Steel Cello Ensemble: The Third Day live in the studio June 20 2007.
