Born in Atlanta, GA and raised in Memphis TN, this writer, rapper, singer and activist is a young fire ball that has a serious passion for his cause and movement. Cass decided to express himself in his own lyrical manner. By the time Cass got to high school he knew what he loved doing but still didn’t know just how much, until his 10th grade year. Around this time Cass started to notice more of the feelings that he had towards the same sex but pushed this behind and decided to keep it moving. T.J. Cass started recording on tapes with a karaoke machine, and after his parents had heard a song called “Oh No the Champion”, they noticed he had talents that would later explode in sound. Having no cable TV, and being the only child in the home at this time he started entertaining himself by making music, writing poetry, and stories and creating clothing.. Ms. Guthrie his 10th grade teacher brought his writing to new forms. He begun to express himself in many other ways. At this time Cass also started working with making instrumentals, and recording himself more professionally. He along with his god brothers Lawrence, and Ellis got together to record the song “Love Me” which was never complete.
T.J. Cass got to his senior year and had went threw group after group not feeling like he was fully expressing who he was. He continued to battle with the feeling of being different but graduated happy and enrolled into ITT tech for animation. Over the summer Cass saw what he was pushing back and decided to experiment. By the time January came around Cass wanted to rap but felt like he couldn’t due to the fact he liked the same sex. He struggled with his sexuality and accepted it before he started writing about it. In this timing he also became a Cassadine and was watched closely by Freddy “Good Love” to assure he didn’t get in too much trouble. After coming out to some of his co workers, then mother and family, Cass finally came out but didn't decide to put it into his music until he recorded the 1st five songs that let him know that he could and would continue as a solo artist. He recorded “Bump This Shit“, “Hustle“, “Intro of my Nigga“, “On the Low“, “Fuck em up”, and “Pussy Ass Nigga“. By this time Cass had dropped out of school, was partying like crazy, after dealing with some illegal venues with a partner of his, he decided to leave for a while to get some things together.
He left and went to job corps, where he meet his partner Gregory. He learned about other out artist and decided he would go for it. He worked on and got his rap style together while he was away. Recording some on his break, Cass continued to work when he got out of Job Corps and finally came up with the name T.J. Cass which stands for his born name plus the name of Cassadine family. He hooked up with some other friends that rap to record the song “Murk Da Beat” with PerFexion, Ben, and ShonT, which sparked ideas for a group. T.J. wasn’t waiting to do what he loved doing. He decided to put a mix of all his music at that time together but once he did so he saw that he could do much better and decided to write and record until he felt he had something. Continuing to record with the group, later named Family Ties due to the fact that they all were tied in as family, he made it his business to own his music. He is now working on solo music as well as Family Ties. This writer, producer, singer, and rapper plan to change the roles, not only for gay rap but as an indie artist, the rights of gays, and even as an entertainer himself. With the inspiration of artist like Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill and Eryka Badu and the love of music from DMX, Ludacris, Pink, and Timbaland he decided to bring in all his forms to complete his sound.
