Following the success of his solo CD "Songs of Hope", clarinettist Tony Gorman is proud to announce the release of his new duo CD "As Wide As the Sky" with tabla virtuoso Bobby Singh, out now on Birdland Records.

The CD will be launched on Thursday 13th September at 6pm at The Stone Gallery on Oxford (Paddington Uniting Church) at the site of the Paddington Markets
with special guests The Martenitsa Choir directed by Mara Kiek. See below for NSW tour schedule.
Scottish born Gorman's 35 year professional career as a musician, composer and producer has made him one of the most respected artists in Australia. Three time ARIA Award winner, Gorman has previously performed in ensembles including MARA!, Michele Morgan's Chelate Compound, the Australian Art Orchestra and is the co-leader of groups including GEST8, Clarion Fracture Zone and The Original Otto Orchestra.
In 1997, Gorman's life dramatically changed when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. In response to his illness, he developed a new way of performing that combines haunting sustained notes and soulful clarinet melodies.
Tony writes...........
"Once a man of many words, these days I like to keep things simpler. It’s more than a decade since I woke up one morning unable to walk properly. ‘Songs Of Hope’ was my response to my diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis, not really knowing where my journey was leading. Having hit the depths of physical and mental distress at various times, I find I still have an irresistible urge to express myself through music. To paraphrase some Sufi philosophy – the artist paints what the poet cannot say, the musician plays what the artist cannot paint.
On this phase of my journey I am joined by my dear friend Bobby Singh and my two Sruthi boxes. Bobby brings such grace and beauty to my vision. From the first time we played together it was like ‘hand-in-glove’. I’ve never had to say anything to him other than “Let’s Play”. An atmosphere, an expression greater than the sum of two instruments, is created and expanded upon, until it feels, to us at least, ‘As Large As Longing – As Wide As The Sky’.
Much Love To You All
Tony"
In collaboration with Bobby Singh he has created a stunning vehicle that transcends genre and the physical limitation of MS to provide a feast of improvised sound and rhythm.
Tabla player Bobby Singh spent much of his childhood studying the northern Indian percussive instrument in Mumbai from the great maestros. He is an internationally renowned virtuoso both in traditional Indian classical music and cross cultural genres. Singh has performed at numerous mainstream arts festivals across Australia and has collaborated with the finest musicians including Slava Grigoriyan, Greg Sheehan, Ben Walsh, David Hirschfelder and Sandy Evans to name a few. . “Bobby Singh is such an extraordinary tabla player, beyond belief……..Stunning.” (Newell, the program.net.au, 16 March 2005).
They create new work together which combines Gorman’s jazz, folk and Western classical roots with Singh’s Hindustani Classical background. The resonances of their two instruments interplay perfectly together. “intensely beautiful and meditative ……this is sparse, dreamy, immaculate, drifting music with great power” Limelight Magazine
