Daltrey says he often shunned the drugs favoured by his contemporaries.

'I did try some but singers need to be incredibly fit,' he once said. 'I wanted to be a good singer and I could not do it with drugs inside me.'

The only hint of Daltrey's rebellious youth is the six-inch scar on his stomach - the result of an operation to remove a rusty nail he swallowed when he was four.
