TONY QUINN. I’ve been singing since I was about 6 years old.In those days I mainly mimicked other people on the radio.I gradually learned what music was all about,my mother used to sing as did my father or so I was told.Anyway I grew up with the knowledge and started to listen to Elvis Presley,Gene Vincent,Buddy Holly,Eddie Cochran,Chuck Berry,BBKing,Muddy Waters and many more. It’s funny how times change and also the music. My first stage appearance was in 1977,I was 17 at the time.I was invited on to the stage by a guy named Griff,he was into 50s Rock ’n’ Roll.He asked if I knew any songs by Carl Perkins,I said well I only know one and that’s Blue Suede Shoes. He said fine what key are you singing it in,I didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. He said, that’s ok you just start singing and we’ll do the rest. And so that’s what happened,my career started there and then and I’ve never looked back. And so in the years to come I moved to Yorkshire for 5 years, studied music, got a band together recorded some songs and did a few gigs for various charities. The band split up in 1985,so my wife and I moved back to Birmingham and I’ve been a solo artiste ever since.Yvonne and I got married in Yorkshire in 1982.We met in 1977 just before Elvis passed away,R.I.P Elvis Presley. My mother passed away in 1985 R.I.P Mom and a couple of years after that my stepfather passed away.So as you can see I have to carry on with my music, because just like everyone else in this game I’m still waiting for a lucky break. In the hopes that one day the right person will hear one of my songs and say hey Tony come and write some songs.Or hey I like your voice I would like to offer you a recording contract.Of course I’m going to say yes because at the end of the week it’s a wage packet I can relyOn After 32 years I’m still waiting, well thank you all for reading this page, you are always welcome to my website please tell your friends. There's some alarming information that you should all know regarding BBC Radio. Many of you will recall the Brand / Ross - Andrew Sachs scandal last year where the controller for Radio 2 resigned and the position was taken by Bob Shennan. It seems that Mr Shennan despises most roots music to a point where he has begun to replace the specialist shows that Radio 2 is so well known for, such as Shake Rattle & Roll, with chat shows featuring sport and incidental pop music. Mr Shennan is trying to find any excuse possible to axe Mark Lamarr completely off BBC Radio and I believe other specialist shows that feature DJs who hold a passion for real music will also receive the axe.
Long gone will be rock'n'roll, rockabilly, blues, reggae, ska, soul, vocal group, jazz & world music from BBC Radio 2, a station that for several decades has been a national institution. What we all forget is we own the BBC. They're forever telling us it's our station, and so it is. It's a public funded network, and we're entitled to have our say.
If this information means anything to you then you must complain to the BBC and let them know how you feel. Fill out the BBC Trust survey at their website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/
Just imagine thousands of emails every hour to Radio 2. Spread the word, and who knows where all this will end up. It might even be time for another march, but one things for sure, they ain't getting away with it.
