Interests

  • General

I love making music, digital art, and mini movies.

I spend a great deal of time chatting at http://www.toolband.com/chat/enhanced.html. This chat room has brought several wonderful people into my life, frustrated the shit out of me, and also made me feel like I had finally found my home on the internet. If you've not been there yet, stop by, there are a lot of cool people to meet.

I will drop just about anything to go see a live show from my most loved bands. I like to network with the people who go to live shows. If you plan on attending live shows in the Bay Area, and are a superfan of these bands, let me know, often, I either meet up before hand or hold parties afterwards.

I am a computer programmer, so I am also interesting in technology. I like the art of modern web/softwre engineering, so I tend to obsess on the associated technologies, and often spend a great deal of effort learning new ones. My core language is PERL. I am well versed with Ruby, PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, and ten years of random computer stuff. Sometimes I think about the stuff I do now, and I have no idea how I learned to do what I do. I learned it all on my own, and didn't go to school for this; so don't let people tell you you have to have a degree in C.S. to be a programmer.

  • Music

I now play the guitar/bass and piano/keyboard. I don't really have a speciality, but I am good at learning songs by ear. I am not so good at busting solos. I am pretty good rhythmically, so I feel comfortable with basic singing/playing of the songs in my own way, with more of an emphasis on the song itself, and not in creating an exact duplicate. My guitar training is a blend of rock that I figured out on my classical/nylon guitar, mixed with my keyboard dabbling & electronic drums, and overlayed with electric guitar.

  • Movies

I love movies. Not just watching them; I enjoy reading the trivia on IMDB; I have a good memory for faces and names, so I enjoy the bios and career histories of the actors and artists who make the films. I still like seeing movies in the theater; especially IMAX; but I have a sort of "rule" which is: I don't usually want to see a movie that doesn't have a compelling reason to be seen on a big screen. So if there's special effects, or dramatic cinematography, then great. Romantic comedy? Nope.

  • Television

I have this love/hate affair with TV. Either I absolutely love a show, or I totally hate it. Right now, the shows I list as my favorites are probably the only shows I watch (well, i watch the local news and MSNBC). I am obsessed with the Office and with Heroes. Those two shows bring me glee. I also love Venture Brothers. I can't wait for season three!

  • Books

I think I used to read more when I read less for work. These days, I read a ton of technical books. It's sort of cut into the fun of reading for me. So now, I like books that allow for a short attention span. I also came back into wonderment with graphic novels, especially the ones that feature Alex Ross' work - he is amazing.
