MAPLEWOOD RULES!!!!!
Sounds Like
Mostly a California Cosmic Country-Rock and Folk-Rock band with Tex-Mex and Tropical tendencies but could also remind one of The Sir Douglas Quintet fronted by Roy Orbison after attending a Buddy Holly, Beatles, Dylan, Byrds, and Cosmic American Music songwriting seminar. and RADIO TOPANGA online radio station!
and CLICK THIS ICON or CD cover - to find out!!!! The sound of open highways, hot border town cantinas, thunderstorms and neon signs. It is also a sound which evokes glimpses of mountains, moonrises over vast ancient deserts and of beaches fondly remembered or yet to be discovered. "One more shot of mescal and a lime - and I'm on my way down that road..."
MILES THOMPSON
THANK YOU MILES THOMPSON http://www.kooch-e-koo.com/ - SHAG - http://www.shag.com/, and Tiki Kim for some of these graphics and keeping the tiki tribe raging!
With a name that sounds like some exotic breed of wild desert horses The Topangas are a country roots rock band with a difference that sets them apart from the pack: Their songs are as groovily DANCE-ORIENTED as they are CLASSIC SOUNDING.
"Stopped by and was blown away again...like Renn is Roy Orbison singing with the Sir Douglas Quintet!" Marshall Holly
The Topangas are named for the famed history-rich Los Angeles Topanga Canyon community which was first inhabited – and named Topanga; meaning “place above where the mountains meet the sea” by the native American Tongva and Chumash tribes.

Though they tip their musical hat fondly to California where Renn was raised from a young age; The Topangas actually have their origins in the tradewind-kissed turquoise sea tropics of the Hawaiian islands (where Renn was born), the ancient mysterious otherworldly deserts of Arizona, and Colorado's mythically majestic Rocky Mountains. There is a sense of travel, time, adventure and all manner of forces of nature that informs their songs and music:
With a line up of stellar musicians such as Mike Gallaher, Ole Rasmus Hjelle, Åge Vaksdal, Tommy Lindman and Tor Bjarne Bjelland backing him founding member and resident songwriter Renn brings a lifetime of songs to the party.
Songs that have been forged from the countless open roads, beckoning highways, and vast wilderness of the American Southwest.
Songs that resonate with the spirit of lessons learned and observations noted in the legion of cafes, clubs, pubs, bars, and honky tonks he’s played all across the U.S. and Europe: Songs that ring and chime with the informed sense that he’s lived the songs he sings.
"Therein lies the key to good songwriting," she said. "It's irrelevant who the song was written about. If a song can't be universal, then you haven't written a good song."
With a sound so clearly evincing a deep love of and connection to the country folk rock and singer-sonwriter music of the ’70s The Topangas could be perhaps taken for some great as yet undiscovered California Country Rock band from that golden era however they imbue their music with such passion and energy that it’s as cool and fresh as the Pacific Ocean breeze!
