I initially planned to write an article about the band Torn Page who resides in prehistoric Texas, an era that much describes the lead singer and writer’s journey, but thinking upon that I realized I had nowhere to put it. I’m neither a journalist nor an editor for a publication. So instead, here is my testimonial as a part time radio disc jockey and paramour of music.
Hot tea with milk – and a splash of Irish whiskey. That is what Torn Page is to me. Childhood memories laced with a new adult twist. This band, consisting of Arley Owens Jr. (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keys), Dan Kinser (Guitar) and Joe Prater (Drums) has taken a leap from the 1960’s to 2008/9 as if jumping was a piece of cake. Not true. The long, winding road never led back, as the Beatles might claim; instead it moved forward with the development of song after song recording whatever experience and/or trauma Arley was facing over the past forty years. His brutal honesty in his lyrics and the melodies backing those words are what has created the band’s motto: A Revelation in Music.
The Doors, The Beatles and a hint of Bob Dylan have joined together in a new band: Torn Page. Little did they know they’d be bettered in some senses and left alone in others. The unique taste Torn Page leaves in your mouth says, “I’ve heard this before – no, no this is new and better!”
We all have influences and music is after all more than 50,000 years old; considering whale songs perhaps its millions of years old. But there is a huge difference between mimicry and invention. To quote Nickelback in their hit song Rockstar: “Get washed-up singers writin’ all my songs”. The opposite is true of Torn Page. They have reinvented the old into the new with uncompromising integrity and a commitment to the truth within themselves and their music. It is my most humble honor to air their songs on my radio show, use them in book trailers and in a few of my books. Their latest sure-to-become-a-hit song is Big City. Big City has a BIG sound! Letters from the Savior is still, and will probably always be my favorite Torn Page song.
