TORTUGA STUDIOS longitude 3354’35.04”S latitude 15110’49.67”E Tortuga Studios is located at 31 Princes Highway in what is thought to be an old brick factory, in the shadow of the brick kilns of Sydney Park. It is a collaborative venture between 15 emerging and established designers, artists and makers, and harbours creative talent from all over the world. Located on the fringe of Newtown’s cultural and artistic hub, Tortuga Studios is reinventing the collective artistic working space, and proudly supports artists, jewellers, photographers, musicians and a host of film, TV and theatre artisans providing sets, props, special effects, wardrobe and more. It is Sydney’s newest artist run initiative. Tortuga has been established by a number of people involved with Mekanarky Studios, located in the famed Ice Cream Factory in Turrella and reputedly one of Sydney’s largest self-funded, artist-run initiatives. In December 2007 Mekanarky Studios melted in the fierce glare of the developers’ sights. Tortuga Studios is the re-embodiment of this eclectic collaborative space, forged with promise and talent, fuelled by artistic passion. The name Tortuga is borrowed from Isla Tortuga, a pirate’s hideout off the coast of Haiti. Named for its turtle-like shape, Tortuga was a free trade pirate port, outside the jurisdictions of the authorities. Featured in the works of Raphael Sabatini, Tortuga is an elusive place of inky seas and leather-bound land, brimming with treasure and ready to be found. *Check out the pics section for more info on what goes on on Tortuga Island.* ..
