Right, you know it, I know it, everybody knows it - MySpace has had its day as a social networking site. We want these gigs to sell out every time - it's good for us, it's good for the bands and most of all it's good for you because it creates a great atmosphere and keeps up the fantastic reputation that the shows have developed.
We've got a shiny new Facebook fan page and I need your help to spread the word. Sign up by clicking the banner below and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE invite all your friends - we can only make this work with your help!
SAT 28th NOV - THE ANSWERING MACHINE + ROSIE + THE INTERROGATORS
We're back - and what a show to come back with! Manchester's The Answering Machine arrived three years ago amidst a flurry of record label drooling and furious journalistic superlatives the likes of which had not been seen since that 'other' Manchester band were launched ten years earlier (I mean Oasis, by the way).
They've already been on tour as main support to The Manic Street Preachers this year (at the personal request of the band!) and have received across the board rave reviews for their debut album released this summer. If you've bought Fifa 2010, you'll also recognise their song 'It's Over! It's Over! It's Over!' from the soundtrack.
Think The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand, only better looking and with glorious sing-along choruses! Check out recent single Oklahoma below and tell me it isn't one of the catchiest, most smile inducing songs you've ever heard!
"If The Inbetweeners had a house band then it would be The Answering Machine. They capture an essence of youth, a heady mixture of running as fast as your legs will carry you and laughing until your stomach hurts" - Gigwise
"On the evidence of the Elastica-esque ‘Obviously Cold’, the Smiths-y chimes of ‘Emergency’ and a new recording of their genius cow-punk debut single ‘Oklahoma’, they’ve shaved off the ‘near’ from the front of the phrase ‘perfect pop songs’. This is a fantastic debut. " - NME
"What The Answering Machine do is energetic, chorus-fuelled, jaunty indie-pop, and they do it very well indeed. Their rise to indie dancefloors is readied for the mainstream." - The Fly
Tickets are on sale NOW priced £2.50 from Selby Town Council (glass stairwell behind the Town Hall) or from wegottickets by clikcing the link below
SAT 5th DEC - YOU ANIMALS + MANY MORE - AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL
Just one week after you've danced yourselves into oblivion with The Answering Machine, everything cranks up AGAIN!!! This time it's just up the road at Selby Community Centre (on Scott Road opposite Abbey Leisure) where CYC are hosting their Aftershock Festival featuring an afternoon full of art and music stuff that you can get involved in, followed by an evening gig headlined by soon to be massive Derby six piece frenetic punk-popsters You Animals.
The gig starts at 8 and is absolutely FREE!!! Local supports will be announced soon.
You Animals are one big sparkling ball of energy with tunes to match. Born from the ashes of the much missed Komakino, they have been gathering plaudits left right and centre.
"Beautifully exploding into a sea of riffs and ridiculous moshing opportunities" said the NME
"You Animals' sprightly three-minute punk-orientated compositions look set to make "pop" a by-word for all things exciting and entertaining rather than dull and dreary" said Drowned in Sound
"Miles beyond infectious, but without the campy overkill that characterizes most of today's pop radio fare" said CPMU
If you are old like me, you would compare them to the genius of late 90s guitar scamps Symposium, but to bring it up to date, file them alongside the frantic antics of Dananananaykroyd, The Mae Shi and Johnny Foreigner. Whatever your frame of reference though, you can't mistake a great pop tune and these guys and girls have them by the bucket load. A great band, a great event and a really great price!
For the last two years, Selby Town Council and 4Youth have teamed up to bring quality live band gigs to Selby for the first time. The aim was to run an intial set of 6 monthly shows that allowed under 18's the opportunity to watch some of the countries fastest rising stars in their own town at a price that everyone can afford.
The shows, priced at just £1.50 each, featured three bands - one from the Selby area, an aspiring regional band and a headliner to rival anything you could see in York, Leeds, Sheffield or any other city you care to name!
The events were all staffed by professional security guards and qualified youth workers to ensure that everyone had the best time possible
The Open, The Pigeon Detectives, Harrisons, Imperial Leisure, Brigade, The Bishops, The Wombats, Zombina & The Skeletones, The Motorettes, To My Boy, Last Gang, Misty's Big Adventure, Team Waterpolo, The Kabeedies, Skeletons, The Paddingtons, Kid British, The Ryes, Two Door Cinema Club and Little Comets have all headlined and many look set to go huge with The Pigeon Detectives and The Wombats already smashing into the charts!
