“Toy Room,” by performance artist Sally Tomato, is the first rock opera of its kind to be produced by a musical group in Portland and integrates music, film, dance, performance, and artistic set design. A soundtrack CD is available through Burnside Distribution Company outlets and CD Baby, and a feature-length film will be completed in fall 2008.
A work in four acts, “Toy Room” chronicles the life story of the enigmatic Sally Tomato. Touching on her childhood and hurtling through a chaotic adult life with an abusive marriage and a period of wild abandon, it arches back to rediscover the innocence of youth.
Throughout, Sally struggles to regain the ability she had as a child to explain or escape the mundane with her imagination. In the end she triumphs, finding that the Toy Room has always existed in her own mind – and reminding us that it exists in ours as well.
Creative members of the Development Team include Wesley J. Turner, Cynthia R. Chimienti, Stephen Phyllop Clarke, Barry D. Kaine, and Jonas Nash. The cast includes Trisha Beck (Innocence), Drew Norman (Husband) and other local talent.
