Madya viene dalla Casamance, una regione a sud del Senegal in cui prevale l’etnia mandinka. Omar viene dalla Gambia, una piccola nazione anglofona contenuta dentro il Senegal. Anche lui è mandinka. Entrambi sono griot, e hanno una parentela stretta con la famiglia di Toumani Diabate e Ballake Sissoko. Il padre di Toumani, il leggendario Sidiki, era originario della Gambia, e quando tornava dai suoi parenti prendeva con sé Omar – che era piccolo – e lo portava con lui a suonare in giro. La kora, l’arpa a 21 corde dei mandingo, è originaria di quelle terre. A differenza dei maliani, in Gambia e in Casamance la kora si suona in modo più ritmico e percussivo, con le corde che vengono colpite e pizzicate.
Naby è di etnia Sussu e viene dalla Guinea Conakry, la patria del balafon mandingo. Anche se il suo cognome è predominante nella casta dei fabbri e dei falegnami lui è un griot, suo padre suonava il balafon e sua madre è una cantante. E’ l’ultimo di undici figli, e dopo aver passato l’infanzia e l’adolescenza in Guinea si è trasferito in Senegal, dove ha suonato con i Bougarabou Ballets. Probabilmente è il miglior balafonista residente in Italia, e canta con una voce graffiata e intensa.
La TP Africa Ensemble propone un repertorio di musica tradizionale mandinga, epiche e storie tramandate dai griot di padre in figlio, che narrano dell’impero del Mali e dei suoi eroi. Quella proposta dalla TP Africa Ensemble può essere considerata come la musica classica dell’africa dell’ovest.
Madya comes from Casamance, a region in the south of Senegal where the people are mostly Mandingo. Omar comes from Gambia, a small Anglophone nation within Senegal. He is also Mandingo. Both are griots and are closely related to Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko. Toumanis' father the legendary Siddiki was originally from Gambia and when he returned to his parents he used to take with him Omar - who was at the time small - and would bring him with him to play around. The kora, a 21 string harp of the Mandingo, is originally from those lands. In Gambia and Casamance the kora is played differently than in Mali, more rhythmic and percussive and the strings are hit and pinched.
Naby comes from the Sussu family inGuinea Conakry,
the motherland of the mandengue balafon. Although his family name is from the cast of the smiths and the carpenters he is a griot, his father played balafon and his mother was a singer. He is the last of 11 children, after having spent his childhood in Guinea he transferred to Senegal, where he played together with the Bougarabou Ballets. He is probably the best balafon player in Italy and sings with a scraped intense voice.
TP Africa Ensemble proposes a traditional repertoire of mandengue music, epics and stories from fathers to sons that talk about the Malian Empire and its heroes. The proposal of TP Africa Ensemble can be considered as West African classical music.
