Bio
TRACY K - "SHE IS AN ENTERTAINMENT" (Style Manitoba Magazine) A review from her 2010 concert with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra states that "her love of music and performing is undeniable - Tracy K exudes talent. Her charismatic personality couples with her strong voice." She's blessed with a voice compared to Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, and Billie Holiday. Turning heads when she takes the stage, she's earned multiple awards as a performer and songwriter. Tracy K works as a studio and live vocalist in many guises and genres, however she's known for beltin' the blues and wailin' on harmonica. Her Right Hand Band was nominated as "Best Electric Act" by Winnipeg blues.com in 2006 and have appeared in two movies! Tracy K performs acoustic folk-blues with Jamie Steinhoff. A humble character who's a chef by trade, when he's not cookin' in the kitchen, he's cookin' on guitar. Ms. K pulled him out of the kitchen and stuck him onstage - now they cook together! His dedication to folk blues from the 1920s to 40s is revealed in swampy Delta slide and Piedmont fingerstyle guitar work. Steamy blues and lively rags, contemporary originals and vintage gems make up their sound. Jamie recorded on Tracy K's award winning songs "Broken & Blue" and "Rollin' with the Changes" which find a home in this show, amidst song choices unheard in her electric set. Jamie will gladly share his knowledge of early blues history with inquiring minds, and Tracy remains the consummate Ukrainian hostess with small-town prairie hospitality and theatrical background. With countless highlights over more than two decades of gracing stages, a few of Tracy K's personal thrills include writing a song for a Hollywood movie; writing a song based on the novel "Icefields" for CBC's "Canada Reads, Ontario Rocks" 2008 concert; opening for harmonica legend James Cotton and sharing a playbill with one of her first female blues influences, the great Koko Taylor. Tracy K was selected to perform at the Toronto Blues Society's 'Blues Summit', their 'Annual Harmonica Workshop', and their prestigious 'Women's Blues Revue'. She gave a stunning performance with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra singing the music of Billie Holiday, some of her own compositions, and favourite jazz numbers from the roaring twenties! Tracy K grew up in the tiny prairie town of Beausejour, near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where she wrote her first song at age eight. A performer in theatre since elementary school and into adulthood with local theatre troupes, her love of the stage is innate. She was raised on sixties radio and sibling record collections, her musical interests developing with the British Invasion and psychedlic era, and blues becoming her foundation. Citing Sonny Terry as her first harmonica influence, Tracy K started on an old harmonica given to her by a Canadian soldier in Germany while backpacking Europe after high school. Tracy K spent the remainder of that decade in Toronto, Canada in studios and on stages of the bustling music scene. Motherhood prompted a hiatus which ended when Tracy K settled into a solo career in Winnipeg, Canada as a recording and touring musician with the release of her first cd in 2000. In 2004, Tracy K moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario and recorded her second album in 2007, home to two award winning songs. "Her songs are very well written, a seamless blend of blues, country and rock" - John Valenteyn, Maple Blues Magazine, 2007. Her fans think she's famous - she thinks she's blessed. I am consistently compared to whiskey edged raspy singers like Joplin, Etheridge, Plant, Raitt. I have also been caught singing Billie Holiday style jazz and swing, and did a killer cover of Anne Murray (?), so there. I'm a VOCALIST. Harmonica playing influenced by Sonny Terry, Sonny Boys One & Two, Little Walter, and James Cotton. Songwriting similar to Bonnie Raitt's material, Lucinda Williams, Delbert McClinton, contemporary blues & folk rock styles. My latest recording has even had one critic draw songwriting comparisons to Santana! The same critic also referenced Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. So you see, we are all unique, and made up of all the millions of little pieces of everything that ever touched our lives - right???? (my little philosophy).. ......

Tracy K possesses the charisma, talent, and versatility instinctive of great performers. it's her amazing and well controlled voice that first captivates - a hallmark often compared to Janis Joplin with the finesse of Bonnie Raitt. She scats, moans, belts and croons. "Tracy K plays a nice harmonica...the real treat is her voice, well-controlled and gritty as a whiskey soaked hobnail" - Jeremy Loomes, Edmonton Sun.
Well known on the Canadian Blues scene, Tracy K’s talents have earned multiple awards including "Harmonica Player of the Year". Her fans love her songwriting, and her smart cover song choices. "Her songs are very well written, a seamless blend of blues, country and rock - not a surprise, perhaps, given the Thunder Bay / Winnipeg focus." - John Valenteyn, Maple Blues Magazine.
Her music has taken her from Canada to the Caribbean as a stand-alone attraction and on playbills with other greats. You can experience her fronting her own projects, singing harmonies and playing harmonica for other artists, and as a featured vocalist at special events - she is a featured vocalist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra's 2010/11 cabaret series. She keeps busy on a wide variety of musical projects, and likes to tour as a four piece band or duo. Tracy K and her (award winning) Right Hand Band is a great festival and club act that perform rock solid originals and covers of blues, roots, and swing. For full band info and promo, go to tracyk.ca "Thunder Bay's Tracy K wowed the crowd at the Blues Summit with her engaging stage presence and a killer band." - Maple Blues magazine May 2009
Her foot-stompin' kitchen party acoustic Blues Duo based out of Thunder Bay has been delighting audiences in concert across Ontario and Manitoba over the recent past, from festivals to entertainment series. They perform lively ragtime and fingerstyle blues from the early 20th century like Sippie Wallace, Blind Blake, and Reverend Gary Davis. Visit Blues Duo on her website with full info, photos and sound. "We are always pleased to have Tracy K & Jamie play, as they draw a crowd from miles around. Their exceptional talent, wit, humour, day to day stories keeps people coming back." - John Cox, Green Achers of Wabigoon, Ontario
She has recently stepped out with the guitarist from her Right Hand Band as a jazz duo, combining their undeniable talent with their fun loving characters. Their sound is derived from classic jazz and blues of the Billie Holiday era. Tony and Tracy first started as a jazz & blues duo in 1999 in Winnipeg, but they were diverted into several other musical projects. Now their duo act is back in action, with a decade's worth of experience from working together. See Tn'T Jazz Duo
Tracy K has shared stages and playbills with many artists at countless venues - too numerous to mention. A couple of Tracy K’s own personal thrills include being the first female featured at the Toronto Blues Society’s Harmonica Workshop, opening for harmonica legend James Cotton and sharing a playbill with one of her first blues influences, the great Koko Taylor. "Opening for James Cotton was Tracy K, whose performance confirmed why she was the best act at the first blues fest" - Ken Wright, Thunder Bay Blues Society
