Tracy Spuehler writes deceptively simple indie-pop songs that are a clear reflection of her own life. Tracy’s new album builds on her tradition of transforming unique personal experiences into bold, visual songs everyone can relate to. Her solo debut “six three one” was an album of “sweet, sensitive songs” (Village Voice) chronicling loss — of her mother, her home, her lover, and even her car. Her sophomore album “It’s the Sound” detailed the joy and heartbreak of her dating experiences in LA with “bursts of wit and sweetness tempered by dollops of sobering reality” (Los Angeles Times). And now Tracy has completed “You’re My Star,” where she finds out what it is to find lasting, unconditional love. It is by far her most swooning, love-happy album to date.
Tracy’s sweet-smart songwriting has been beloved by tastemakers, DJs and critics since the release of “six three one.” KCRW listeners already adored the delicious hooks of “Where Do We Go?” long before it charmed the nation through a major Nissan TV campaign. Both “six three one” and its follow-up, “It’s the Sound” received heavy independent radio support, landing in CMJ’s top 200 and KCRW’s top 50 charts. Both albums have also found major placements in TV (Weeds, Men In Trees, What About Brian, Joan of Arcadia, Life As We Know It, Laguna Beach) and in film (Mozart and the Whale, Love Thy Neighbor).
In 2005, Tracy was nominated for the LA Weekly’s Best Singer-Songwriter Award, and critics nationwide fell for her “organic, airy quality” (American Songwriter) and "writing so unobtrusive, she is able to evoke profound depth of feeling through little more than subtle suggestion" (Paste Magazine). Maybe Miles of Music put it best, calling Tracy “Simply lovable.”
Recorded in Chicago with longtime producer Liam Davis, “You’re My Star” deepens Tracy’s strength as a songwriter. The title track sets the tone for this collection of love songs, followed by the mid-tempo rocker “Unforgettable,” with its raw vocal treatment and infectious hooks. “Orange Crush” bursts a sticky line of pop poetry while “Jones,” an in-utero tribute, is both captivating and addictively melodic.
