In
1996, the industrialized, Northern Italy-situated city of Brescia was the perfect place for Tragodia to be born and for their music to start being shaped. Years have past since then. Years of truly dedicated musical research across the domain(s) of gloomy yet melodic metal. The band was born as a quintet consisting of life-time friends Francesco Lupi (guitars), Lorenzo Marchello (bass) and Daniele Valseriati (drums), plus Giovanni Maffeis (vocals) and Carlo Salvoni (keyboards).
After releasing in
1998 a critical-acclaimed demo-tape,
Dramas in splendent realms, which the band tried to achieve a fresh balance between raw doom-death roots and bitter gothic influences with, and the addition of Marco Plati as second guitar player, in
2001 Tragodia entered the studio again in order to record their self-produced
All our miseries mini-CD, a pompous opus of symphonic gothic metal. Both the demo-tape and the mini-CD earned the band awards from various metal magazines, with
All our miseries being awarded as top-demo of the month by Italian Grind Zone (like the
Dramas in splendent realms demo-tape) and French Metallian magazines. Many gigs (including a live appearance in Greece!) followed both releases.

After some major line-up changes, which saw the departure of both Giovanni and Carlo – keyboards duties will from now on handled by guitarist Francesco – the band switches to as-yet unexplored musical domains, partially abandoning some typical sonic trademarks Tragodia used to be associated with. Consisting of 9 gems of melodic yet powerful, catchy and intense metal, mastered at the world famous Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila, the album, aptly entitled
The Promethean legacy, is released on Oct 1, 2007 by Dark Balance Records (The Netherlands). Prior to the recording sessions, the band recruits vocalists Carlo Bellani and Valentina Turati, thus enriching its sound with both male and female singing. A few weeks before the album could reach the shelves, guitarist Marco leaves the band bringing in the exceptionally skilled Riccardo Tonoli as his own substitute.
2008. As soon as the
The Promethean Legacy is released, vocalist Carlo leaves the band in order to pursue its solo career. After welcoming on board in record time Stefano Roncadori as its new frontman, the band starts performing well attended gigs but then again both singers Stefano and Valentina find themselves no longer interested in the project and quit Tragodia. As a consequence the live cycle in support of
The Promethean legacy abruptly stops and Tragodia’s rehearsal room soon re-opens to new auditions...
...2009. After months of relentless research, Tragodia unveils its new line-up, this time a solid, smoothly cooperating one, with Luca Meloni and Tamara Basile behind the mics. The band soon schedules some gigs before the summer, also presenting to the attendees’ great acclaim some new tunes set to be recorded for the as-yet untitled sophomore album.
No existing label could be found to describe today’s Tragodia’s musical genre. Something between heavy metal and gloom music should fit. The path ahead is long, perilous and marvellous...
