New Horizons is a satellite alternative program designed to transition students suspended long term and/or 365 days back into the public school system, with options to challenging situations and an opportunity to obtain a quality education.
New Horizons provides a structured day of academics, vocational training, and behavioral modification. New Horizons was cited by the Superintendent of Durham Public Schools as one of the contributing factors to the second lowest drop out rate in the districts history.
GOALS:
TO: Improve the academic performance of students at risk of academic failure.
Reduce the drop out rate of students suspended long-term 365 days.
Stimulate the intellectual ability of young people, re-direct their leadership ability, improve their social interaction, and restore a greater understanding of purpose.

Martina Dunford also affectionately know as Coach "D" is the founder of Training for Success where for 20 years she has worked to help young people re-direct their lives from academic failure and hopelessness to good citizens with bright prospects for the future. As Executive Director of New Horizons, Dunford successfully provides second chance opportunities for students who have been unsuccessful in the traditional school system.
Coach "D" has a BS degree from Norfolk State University, (2)MS degrees from North Carolina Central University, she has compledted a certification in Family Management from Duke University.

About me: New Horizons is a program based in Durham, NC that works with middle and high school students who have been suspended 365, long term suspension, or dropped out of public schools. We are a non-profit program in partnership with Durham Public Schools and various supporters and sponsors. It is a small school setting with an extra touch of discipline, love, and high academic standards where our motto is,"failure is not an option".
Many of our students come with various issues, such as behavior problems, academic issues, hard home situations, etc. You name it, we've seen it.
The staff is a hand picked group of individuals dedicated to turning young lives around and sending them on more positive and more productive paths.THIS PAGE IS MANAGED BY STUDENTS AND STAFF OF NEW HORIZONS.

As an advocate for many years I try to bring awareness of the issues that the youth in our country have to face. I've done this through my speaking engagements and now my book Runaway. I'm so happy to befriend others who share the same concerns and make efforts towards helping young adults as I do.
