2008 Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp a Resounding Success!
On the weekend of September 12-14, the birthday of the “Father of Bluegrass”, Bill Monroe, was celebrated in grand style as 58 people from Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and as far away as France, England and Canada gathered together at the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky for the 3rd Annual Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp.
Participants were treated to intensive classes on the playing techniques, influences, songwriting style and tunings of the man whose band, The Blue Grass Boys, inspired the moniker of the genre known today as “Bluegrass” music. Adding to the experience were unique storytelling sessions about Monroe from the camp faculty, who are all world class professionals that knew and worked with “Big Mon” during the last 50 years of his life.
The faculty included Bobby Osborne, Roland White, Mike Compton, Richie Brown, Frank Wakefield and Butch Waller. The teaching staff was supplemented by a Camp Historian, Tom Ewing and a Camp Luthier, Will Kimble.
The specialized camp also included:
• A field trip on a 59-passenger tour bus to Bill Monroe’s home town of Rosine, Kentucky for a fish-fry at the Rosine General Store, and guided visits to the Rosine Cemetery where Mr. Monroe and members of his family are buried.
• A Faculty Concert on Saturday night that included all members of the Faculty performing together on the same stage in the museum’s concert venue, Woodward’s Café.
• Mandolin set-ups and repairs performed onsite by Will Kimble, of Kimble Mandolins.
On Sunday, as remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through Owensboro with 60-80 mph winds, the Museum was without power, but not without Monroe enthusiasts still quenching their thirst for knowledge from faculty teaching by the light of lanterns and flashlights.
“In one class in particular we had Bobby Osborne and Butch Waller telling stories around two battery-powered lanterns. It was so close to a campfire session that all we needed were some marshmallows and sharp sticks!” said Mike Lawing, Camp Director.
All said, 2008 Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp was successful in creating lasting friendships between like-minded people, promoting Kentucky’s own International Bluegrass Music Museum, celebrating the life of Bill Monroe and continuing the music he created, BLUEGRASS!

• While it might seem ironic that a musical art form known for its resistance to any electric instrument would benefit from the world’s most recognized state-of-the-art electronic medium, the International Bluegrass Music Museum is confident that its new internet service is going to be bluegrass heaven to fans old and new around the globe. RBI Radio Bluegrass International, a non-commercial, 24-hour internet radio station, made its debut Tuesday May 1, 2007 and streams from the museum’s website at Bluegrass Museum
• The fully licensed stream, emanating from the only international bluegrass music museum in the world, features programming based on the museum’s personality and collections—with input from bluegrass fans around the world.
RBI will consistently expand its content, utilizing the museum’s daily contact with legends, luminaries, and up-and-coming artists to provide bluegrass news, classic tracks, new releases, disc reviews, in-studio performances, international recordings, archived radio shows from around the world, vintage vinyl, festival announcements, festival recordings, and museum news. Interactive extras such as forums, blogs, and calendars will be added as the station grows.
Longer range plans include multi-lingual bluegrass programs from around the world, vintage and classic music from the museum’s vast collection of rare recordings, a fully translated multi-lingual RBI host website, and streaming the museum’s exclusive audio and video interviews with iconic musicians from bluegrass music’s first generation. “With RBI, we will provide listeners a satisfying, educational bluegrass experience while serving as a worldwide electronic extension of the museum,” said the museum’s Assistant Director, Mike Lawing.
• Beginning Jan. 1st, 2008, RBI listeners will pay $4 per month to access an uninterrupted stream. Members of the bluegrass museum, however, will receive UNLIMITED, FREE access as part of their annual membership. Although the May 1st launch served as something of an “Open House” to the new station, the official “Grand Opening” began Friday, May 18 at 8:30 AM Central with The Bluegrass Morning Show hosted by The Bluegrass Tramp and engineer/program director Rob Calhoun.
The Bluegrass Morning Show streams LIVE every Friday morning form 8:30 to 10:30 AM Central.
