Welcome to Transatlantic Bluegrass, home of the Transatlantic Bluegrass School!
The residential course is being held in the beautiful coastal village of Newport, Pembrokeshire (Wales) May 6-10, 2009. Our classes are being taught by some of the top bluegrass musicians in the US, who are also highly regarded for their skill as teachers.
Our instructors now confirmed are Claire Lynch (singing, songwriting), Jim Hurst (guitar), Missy Raines (double bass), Ross Nickerson (banjo) and Jason Thomas (fiddle, mandolin). Our other instructors will be announced shortly.
There will be morning and afternoon sessions, but you'll also have some free time during the day to pick with other students, take a walk on Newport Beach, or just relax and enjoy the surroundings. In addition to your daily classes and workshops, there'll be social activities, including - of course - evening jamming at the local pubs! On Thursday evening, we'll have our annual student concert who will be performing at Newport's Memorial Hall. And on Saturday the faculty take the stage - and with the line-up of top musicians performing (including the Claire Lynch Band), it's going to be a night to remember!
On Wednesday evening, May 7th we will have registration and a reception where you'll have a chance to meet your instructors and fellow students, and socialise before the classes begin. This is followed by picking sessions held in a few venues in the town centre.
Scheduled classes will be held Thursday, May 7 through Sunday, May 10th. Students will register for a specific class, but will also be able to choose from elective workshops. These workshops are currently being organised, and will be announced in the coming weeks.
It was very important to us to make our bluegrass school affordable for all our students, and to give participants choices that will make it a great experience for everyone. We decided to hold it in the beautiful seaside village of Newport, Pembrokeshire because of its outstanding beauty, charm and friendly village atmosphere. Most locations are within walking distance and there is a choice of lovely, but affordable, accommodation including hotels and B&Bs, two caravan parks and camping areas. Local restaurants and eateries offer delicious food for any budget. Many visitors from around the world come to visit our coast every year and we’ll be posting photos of the area and details regarding accommodation choices soon.
To offer more individual attention for participants we are limiting enrolment to 20 students for each instrument. Given the limited number of spaces available for each class, we recommend that you reserve your space without delay. The total cost for the course, including all activities, performances, and elective workshops is only £195. The school has a scholarship program for musicians between the ages of 16-25. Younger students may be considered if attended by a parent or legal. We also have reduced family rates, and other concessions.
