Transition Brighton & Hove's Interests
|
| General | We are currently in the process of forming Transition Interest Groups. These will begin by contacting other local groups that are already working in their area of interest and coming up with ways to reduce energy consumption and increase sustainability.
The groups currently forming are: Food; Waste; Energy; Buildings and Construction; Transport; Business and Economics; Clothing and Textiles and Liason with Local Government.
In the future we will also be forming groups for Health; Youth and Heart and Soul (the psychology of change) and maybe some others.
Because we are a Transition City, we are also setting up Neighbourhood Groups to bring community back to our neighbourhoods, as well as city-wide. | | Movies | An Inconvenient Truth; The 11th Hour; The Power of Community; The End of Suburbia; Crude Impact; What a Way to Go - Life at the End of Empire; Peak Oil: Imposed by Nature; How to Save the World - One Man, One Cow, One Planet; Energy Crossroads; The Allotment; The Future of Food; Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth, Healing the Self; Thomas Berry - The Great Story; Message in the Waves; The Life of a Plastic Bag; A Convenient Truth; Are We Changing Planet Earth?; Can We Save Planet Earth?; Crude; Escape From Suburbia; Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash; Fueling the Future; Who Killed the Electric Car?; Robert Newman's The History of Oil; The Story of Stuff... | | Television | Turn off the television and play some games instead. It's nicer. :) | | Books | Six Degrees; Gaian Democracies... | | Heroes | Every single person who is using their life to affect positive change. One person can make a difference, together we can change the future. |

Transition Brighton & Hove's Blurbs |
About me:
Transition Brighton and Hove is a group of volunteers aiming to start a city-wide community response to the challenges of climate change and peak oil. We want to bring together the collective skills and creativity in Brighton & Hove to evolve a sustainable low energy future reflected in an Energy Descent Action Plan. We are part of an international network of towns and cities with the same aims, the Transition Network (http://www.transitiontowns.org).
Why are we doing this? Two main reasons: climate change and peak oil.
Both issues have the same cause: our excessive consumption of fossil fuels. The burning of fossil fuels is the main source of greenhouse gases, and there is only a limited amount of them on the Earth, which means that depletion will have severe implications for our energy usage if they continue to be our main source of energy.
In view of this, it is essential that we reduce significantly the amount of fossil fuels we use, starting at the local level.
How are we going to achieve it?
We are writing an Energy Descent Action Plan. We start by describing our ideal sustainable Brighton and Hove by 2027, describe the steps needed to get there, and try our best to make our city follow those steps.
Who are we?
We are all volunteers, some of us involved in other environmental groups, some not.
