Translit is a method of encoding Cyrillic letters with Latin ones. The term stems from transliteration, a method used by interpreters to TRANSLATE OTHERWISE UNTRANSLATABLE words such as names or geographical locations. Translit is also a music project originally created by Andrei Smourov and Gleb Schennikov in 2004. Both - Russians living in Amsterdam. Smourov wrote songs and attempted to sing them (rather badly but passionately), Schennikov provided the accompanying musical chaos. The duo's live performances (in Europe and Russia) have been marked by mixed reactions from the crowd and a high level of enthusiasm and energy coming from the musicians. The duo released two albums: “Literali” in 2005 and “The Shores” in 2006 (both on Leonid Fedorov’s label Ulitka Records), after which Schennikov stopped showing signs of willingness to continue playing music, and was therefore fired from Translit’s ranks. By end of 2006 Smourov was left with a stack of new material and no one to play or record it with. In the meantime 2006 also saw the release of “Krasota” (“Beauty”) by Leonid Fedorov and Vladimir Volkov – a rather unconventional collection of musical material, for which Smourov co-wrote the lyrics with his close friend, artist ArtHur Molev. The pair set up their own mini-label S’MOL Records and released Translit’s live album entitled “Vafrel / Ocean of blots”. Shorty thereafter Smourov was contacted by a London-based musician and sound engineer Gosha Hniu. He introduced Smourov to some Russian Israel-based musicians – Igor Kungurov (guitar), Urik Borodin (violin), Mikhail Mikhalkin (bass) and Sergei Mednikov (drums) – who eventually became part of the new Translit line-up. The sessions, organised by Hniu, took place in May 2008 and resulted in the recording of 10 new songs, which was be released in April 2009 under the title “Tiho” (“Quietly”) on Ulitka Records. The release of the record was celebrated by 3 concerts in Moscow on 23, 24 and 25 April 2009. One of the best Russian saxophone players of all times, Sergei Letov, joined Translit on stage for all three gigs. At present Smourov is working on new material, which the band want to record with some additional musicians and release in 2010.
