music, rats, yoga, shakespeare, film, reading, soviet history, cooking, not acting like a grownup, Orthodox Christianity, theology, science, radio: NPR (especially the weekend shows) and Ancient Faith Radio, tattoos, etc., etc., etc.... currently writing my dissertation for a PhD in english. it's going slowly, but it's getting done. if you can think of anything better to do than getting a PhD in the humainities, i suggest doing that instead. i teach college courses...among other things...Music
jazz (early be-bop type stuff); classical (sibelius, beethoven, the russians, some wagner--anything heavy and violent, dark, ciaroscuro, dramatic); classic country; all sorts of rock and metal; world music; byzantine and gregorian chant...Movies
i am a film junkie, esp. american films from the 30s and 40s... big on early gangster (20s-30s) and noir films (40s-50s). love chinese films. really very highly recommend everything that majid majidi (iran) has done...check him out! his newest film, "willow tree" is awesome.Television
i despise television. that said, i do watch shows on dvd. if it was good, it'll come out on dvd and i will check it out.Books
history, shakespeare, theology... thomas merton, maximus the confessor, olivier clement, steinbeck, solzhenytsyn, dostoyevsky, o'connor, ian spiegelman, salinger... (why do so many of these start with s?) also like scientific american, and other such publications.Heroes
i don't really believe in "heroes" the way it's probably intended here. we're all human beings. sometimes we do remarkable things despite our human limitations.
