Sounds Like
A hummingbird on steroids
OR... more specifically... this is what I sound like at the 2007 Urbana Slam Finals:
Nicole Homer is a finding her voice. Since she started slamming, she has won numerous slams at venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Café, The Bowery Poetry Club, Brookdale College, Port Africa, Cantab Lounge and the legendary Chicago Green Mill. She has featured at the Shore Institute for Contemporary Arts, The Five Spot, The Brooklyn Big Art Show, Georgian Court University and has opened for Amiri Baraka and Miquel Algarin at the Newark Museum and for Jim Caroll at the Forum Theater.
She is winner of the 2006 Emerging Writers Audience Favorite award at Wordfest 2006. That same year, she was an NYC Urbana finalist but went to the 2006 National Poetry Slam with Central Jersey's own Loser Slam!!!
Her poetry can also be heard on the Indie Feed podcast or read in the His Rib: Stories, Poems and Essays by Her.
In August 2007, Nicole competed in the 2007 National Poetry Slam in Austin, TX with the rest of the Urbana team where they placed 6th in the nation.
During Summer 2008, she participated in NPS2008 in Madison, WI with her lovely Loser Slam teammates. They placed 22nd out of 76 and are currently ranked 12th in the nation (and a little bit beyond) in group piece performances.
Recently, Nicole and LoserSlam competed in the NorthBeast regional Poetry Slam hosted in Boston, MA where she placed 2nd in the individual competition. Her home team, Loser Slam earner the privlege of competing in this year's National Poetry Slam in West Palm Beach, FLA.
Nice Stuff Some Nice People Said About Me
NICOLE HOMER is a poet unafraid to use everything in
her arsenal. Funny, powerful and undeniably real, she
is an exhilarating new voice in poetry and a sly
unflinching presence in performance. She has become an
absolute force in the NYC poetry slam, and for good
reason.
Cristin O'Keefe Aptowitz, author Words in Your Face: A Guided Tour Through Twenty Years of the New York City Poetry Slam
Nicole Homer's work - is a body of intangibility. She is the flex and
the constriction, the clench and creak -- of our most unflatteringreflections. She does not allow you laughter without a gun-butt'n reprieve attached. The only comfort in her words are the truths that lie waiting to feed you. Mahogany L. Browne, Author, Owner of PoetCD.com/Penmanship Books & Nuyorican Poets Cafe Slammistress
Nicole Homer is, in a word, real. She is not flash and glam, but a hugely talented writer who addresses audiences with the same frank demeanor and subtle charm she uses among her closest friends. She comes armed with a wicked cleverness and an arsenal of work that explores the humanity in each of us. I've watched Nicole consistently turn hundreds of cynical New Yorkers into praise-slinging fans in a matter of minutes. Still, she walks away humble, appreciative, and brutally human.

Although a national finalist in the poetry slam and no stranger to performing in front of huge crowds, Nicole Homer always manages to maintain an intimacy in her work that makes it sound as though her poems are being whispered in your ear.
