Awarded, “Best of Manhattan” by New York Press , Treehouse Shakers, Inc., a non-profit dance and theater company, was co-founded in 1997 by lifetime friends Mara McEwin writer/actor/director & Emily Bunning choreographer/dancer/producer www.treehouseshakers.com in NYC. We make true to form original Dance-Theater, melding both creative worlds simultaneously. Rebecca Longworth of Offoffoffbroadway.com wrote of our work, “Emily and Mara create dance-theater that can legitimately call itself both. They are artists who clearly cherish the fullness of their hybrid medium as well as their own friendship and collaboration.”
Since our inception we have created and performed works for adults and children in many established performance venues, as well as schools, theaters and community centers throughout the nation. In 1999 we created our first work for young audiences, Flying Through Rainbows, which premiered in New York City at the Nino Nada festival. Flying Through Rainbows was featured in the New York Times to a rave review. Since that time we have created five works for young audiences. Currently, three of our original shows are on a rotating tour for young audiences including; Coyote's Dance, Animal Rhythms & Desert Travels. All three shows integrate theater, modern dance and live music and received reviews in Time Out New York, New York Press, New York Family, Big Apple Parent and more. Laurel Graeber of The New York Times raved about Coyote's Dance, " In the captivating Coyote's Dance, an interactive spectacle, the proud. clever coyote of Indian legend, is being imaginatively reincarnated by the Treehouse Shakers."
This past June we premiered our original adult dance-play, Lost Arroyos, at HERE Arts Center, NYC. Lost Arroyos , follows several characters as they explore class struggles, race boundaries and blurred identities woven within the American cultural tapestry. We are currently booking 2008-2009 tour dates with Lost Arroyos for both adult and mature teen audiences. Lost Arroyos marks our tenth original dance-play premiere.
Treehouse Shakers was named for the wonders of nature, the power of imagination and the excitement of dance. The treehouse, like the theater, is a sacred space where imagination is the most potent currency and stories are the roots of the world.

From one Alternet fan to another — thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — whether in school, home, government, or elsewhere — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief; they use it to justify themselves and to discourage us from uniting. They use it to shape the world's political & economic systems that perpetuate war & poverty. Their real power comes not so much from secret conspiracies as from propaganda that we all hear every day and that we hardly notice. ¶ But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. ¶ The outcome of the ideological struggle is not yet determined, so no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement, if you haven't already: get involved in whatever way feels right for you. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world. ¶ I'm impressed with ideas of Lakoff & Waldman about *how* to spread the vision, so I'm trying to promote their ideas via comments like this one and the essay on my MySpace page. It's free (I'm not selling anything). ¶ The real war is between classes, not nations; so I'll picnic on July 14, not July 4. CLOSE GUANTANAMO BY BASTILLE DAY; PASS IT ON. ¶ Peace, love, hope, and revolution — Eric
