Free Radical are lead vocalist and songwriter Trenton (South Africa), Kaz – bass (Uganda), Marco - guitar (Ibiza), Sam - Calabash / drums (Zimbabwe). They play a hybrid of reggae, hip hop and electro with a strong focus on songs and melodies. Now embarking on recording their debut album, which is being produced, by Dean James (Nitin Sawhney, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly) and Craigie Dodds (Sugarbabes, Natty, One Eskimo).
Trenton is considered one of the pioneers of the news wave African music scene, he is from Johannesburg although spent much of his childhood growing up in Kenya, Nigeria and the Middle East. From a young age he was politically active campaigning against apartheid and joining the, then banned, ANC party. At the same time he developed an interest in Music and went on to form the electro / rock group Anti-Gravity who charted with their release through Sony. This culminated in them opening for both the Prodigy and Faithless.
After experiencing various parts of Africa, Trenton decided it was time to explore other parts of the world. His journey led him to London where he re-connected with Maxi Jazz and had some chance meetings with the likes of Michael Franti and Black Thought (The Roots). These fed him with fresh inspiration to start speaking of the wisdoms he had experienced and could reflect on. Trenton continued to write songs but it was not until meeting with Marco that Free Radical was born. Kaz became the third member and the band started to perform live.
Marco, originally from the south of Germany grew up in Ibiza where he was influenced by the chilled out sounds of the island. His first London musical adventure was working with UK MC Illustrate under the alias 'Combination' - working with Roots Manuva and supporting Killa Kella, Phi Live Sipha and many more. He also played in a reggae band in Barcelona called Urban Roots.
Multi-instrumentalist Kaz, was once the keyboard player with the P-Funk outfit Mania7 alongside the legendary Pee Wee Ellis -sax player for James Brown. He is also a producer and arranger writing and producing songs for artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Sam comes from Zimbabwe. He was forced to leave his home due to the declining conditions in the country and for now lives in the UK. Although he is an accomplished drummer he also specializes in playing the calabash and adds a unique dynamic to the bands live performance.
Trenton also runs the label www.blackmangomusic.com - an afrocentric label trying to pioneer new sounds coming out of the African continent (including Goldfish, Inemo and Carla Diamond).
as well as www.africanhiphopshop.com and www.africanhiphoptv.com which fall under www.afrolution.com.
