The Stick
The instrument I perform on is called the Chapman Stick (R). The Stick is a unique musical instrument invented by Emmett Chapman in 1969. It consists of a long fretboard with twelve strings spanning a bass and guitar range. Sound is produced when the strings are "tapped" against the frets by the fingers. An electronic pickup is used to amplify the sounds. This new technique allows the musician to use both hands in order to play multiple parts like a piano while having the direct fingers-to-strings control and feel similar to a guitar. The model of Stick that I use utilizes a MIDI pickup on the upper strings which can trigger a synthesizer while simultaneously playing the natural sound of the Stick. Mr. Chapman continues to manufacture the Stick at his home in Woodland Hills, CA. See
www.stick.com for more information.
History
I have been playing the Chapman Stick since October of 1998 after finding it online after researching a guitar I had just purchased. Knowing that my future lied with it I mail ordered it never having actually played one. Upon it's arrival it was the only Stick in Kansas for a number of years. Having to be self-taught (or else move to the coast), previous study on the guitar, piano and viola led to a quick adaptation on the Stick. I studied music composition and performance at Wichita State University prior to the Stick-life. Now, I play around Wichita several times a week with 'that thing that looks like a sitar... or maybe a dulcimer' (I guess I could tell them it's a 'Dulcitar'). That get's mixed in with the viola and some percussion.

*Violist with world music group Equinox. Members include Gino Salerno, the man who makes statues out of tree trunks, and Terry Corbett- the Van Gogh of tile. Cd's are available upon request.
*Music appeared on N.P.R.'s nationally syndicated 'Echoes' radio program. Concert's and song's aired on 90.1 KHCC Radio Kansas and Night Tides program on 89.3FM in Kansas City.
*One composition appears on the internationally released album entitled "Echoes of Tuvalu" which reached 1 on the New Age radio playlists in July and August of 2006. See www.echoesoftuvalu.com for more information.
The Music
My compositions and style have peaceful qualities yet have a dynamic and passionate feel. Improvisation is one of the most important aspects of the music, because there is a sense that I can 'feel' the audience and create music specifically the moment. At performances I'll also play classical, jazz, standards, pop, world-style funk depending on each situation, but whether or not the song song I'm playing is mine, only when I play with Love can I approach the real Music.

Hi Trevor, I just noticed you'll be performing at The Walnut Valley Fest in September! Just imagine, a Chapman Stick player in Winfield!! Wonderful!! I will be there this year as well, but I'm pretty sure it'll be as a contestant in the Fingerstyle Guitar Contest instead of as a regular performer this time.
