Background on Triage
The word triage is a French word meaning "sorting," which itself is derived from the Latin tria, meaning "three." The term literally means sorting into three categories. Much of the credit for modern day triage has been attributed to Dominique Jean Larrey, a famous French surgeon in Napoleon's army who devised a method to quickly evaluate and categorize the wounded in battle and then evacuate those requiring the most urgent medical attention. He instituted these practices while battle was in progress and triaged patients with no regard to rank.
By the same token, Indianapolis artists believe it is time to assess the immediate needs with regard to our planet's future, including addressing ways to slow and eventually halt global warming, and to change the political landscape that encourages complacency in the face of war and social injustice.
About me: Activist Arts Demonstration “TRIAGE: Earth, Justice, Peace” to occur June 30th in Fountain Square, Indianapolis, followed by a benefit concert at Radio Radio.
On Saturday, June 30, 2007, Fountain Square will host TRIAGE, an all-ages free indoor/outdoor exhibition of public art in a variety of media – two and three dimensional work, installation, dance, performance art, film, spoken word, and music – all relating to the interconnected themes of earth, justice and peace. All of the gravest issues our society and environment face can be related to this triad of subjects, and this event will bring together a diverse number of very skilled artists.
“This is art with a purpose,” says T.J. Reynolds, one of the event organizers. “Artists are working together to raise awareness and educate the public on issues that should be kept in the forefront of our minds and work.” Reynolds continues, “To make true changes in their lives, people must feel inspired. By artistically expressing one’s message, it has a better chance of affecting the audience in a meaningful way.”
Over 80 artists, writers and performers will converge on Fountain Square to deliver their creative and urgent messages on Saturday, June 30, in this free event taking place from 10 am until 6pm. Artists will be spread throughout the Fountain Square area, and a main stage will feature musical acts throughout the day, along with an open drum circle at 3pm and an open mic at 4pm. (It will be moved to the Wheeler Arts building in case of rain.) Then later that evening, Radio Radio will host a benefit concert for the Hoosier Environmental Council. The evening concert will start at 9pm, and entry is $5.
