The George Harrison Tributes are shows celebrating the music and life of the "Quiet Beatle." They began January 18th at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, Texas hosted by Ky Hote and Owl.
Everyone recognizes the name George Harrison (1943-2001), but many people can't name any of the songs he wrote. Dubbed the "Quiet Beatle" or the "Spiritual Beatle," Harrison's guitar playing established the Beatle sound as much as Lennon & McCartney's songwriting. His well crafted guitar solos were never showy and he never wasted a note. On Rubber Soul, Harrison broadened their sound with the use of the sitar (Norwegian Wood) and Indian inspired compositions (Love You To). Frank Sinatra called Harrison's Something "the most beautiful love song ever written" Other Beatle classics he penned include Here Comes the Sun, Taxman, and If I Needed Someone. Although Lennon was thought of as the "political Beatle," Harrison wrote the most scathing commentary of the ruling class (Piggies). After the Beatles' breakup, Harrison recorded the first "solo Beatle" hits with All Things Must Pass and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth. Organizing The Concert for Bangladesh set the precedent for Live Aid and its many permeations.
The goal of the Tributes were not to imitate his music, but emulate it. We celebrate George as a songwriter, an instrumentalist and a spiritual guide. We've invited musicians in the community to come bring their favorite Harrison song or add a solo or harmony to the arrangements. Some musicians were recruited for their specific appropriateness for a song. Many of the musicians were unfamiliar with much of George's work and developed an appreciation for his music by getting involved.
Exhausted by Beatlemania and always being in the limelight, Harrison spent much his life living quietly with his wife Olivia and son Dhani. He founded Handmade Films to produce Monty Python's Life of Brian. Harrison never failed to appreciate laughter and even during his most devotional periods he included jokes in his album covers. Known for his affinity with the Krishna Consciousness Movement, Olivia Harrison said this about him, "he embraced the essence of all religions… he would gladly spend hours discussing God with an interested person."
We play songs from his whole career and demonstrating his integration of Indian music and western pop. We try to have some old vinyl artifacts as well. The first four Tributes ended with a medley of Brainwashed, including the lovely chanting that it finishes with, followed by My Sweet Lord. Other musical highlights include Isn't It A Pity featuring Guy Forsyth on vocals and saw, Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) arranged for banjo, Within You Without You featuring Oliver Rajamani playing tablas and Owl Morrisonon viola and guest vocalists every year, and the hard-bop jazz version of Blue Jay Way where a trumpeter appeared on stage totally impromptu.
George continued recording music and perfecting the slide guitar sound that was to be one of his distinct trademarks up until his death in 2003. In the late 90's he connected with the critics again with his release of Cloud Nine and his instigation of the Traveling Wilburys (with bandmates Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne). He was working on his album Brainwashed when he died of throat cancer. Finished by his son, Dhani, the album stands as a fitting epitaph for a brilliant artist and a person who tried to spread light and joy with his works. His last words were "Love one another."
A short history of the George Harrison Tributes... Ky Hote and Owl have been doing tribute concerts since 2000. Their first recipient was Yoko Ono. While playing at the now defunct venue Gaby and Mo's, they got the idea to celebrate Ono's birthday with a "Tribute Hoot," to this under appreciated composer and performer. They placed an ad in the Austin Chronicle to find other Ono appreciators and presented the show as a benefit for the Capital Area Food Bank. The concert featured various folk and rock and roll artists and had performance art, pieces to handle (such as album covers and birthday cake) and both acoustic and head banging music. The bonus guest of the show was KGSR'sJody Denberg making a rare stage appearance. The event was reprised in 2001 and garnered a "Live Shots" review by Ken Lieck.
2001 saw the untimely death of John Hartford. He had been one of Ky's most influential mentors, so he and Owl put together a tribute to him and presented it at Artz Rib House, an apropos place to pay homage to a bluegrass picker who enjoyed the simple things in life like steamboats and barbecue. The event included spoken word pieces and album covers. The artifacts included a blow-up model of the Delta Queen steamboat and a piece of plywood that Hartford had danced on at one of his shows. Austin musician such as Bill Oliver, George Ensle and Steve Brooks were in attendance and for two years in a row the spirit of John Hartford was brought to Artz.
The death of George Harrison (11/29/03) was mourned worldwide, but surprisingly enough, there was no Austin Hoot dedicated to him. Ky and Owl noticed this lack and Thus they began at the Cactus Cafe on 1/18/05. It was so much fun that tributes were developed in Deerfield Beach, FL and Nuevo Chile, TX and now the Cactus Cafe is in their third year of the event. A tribute is being planned for BanjoJim's in NYC for December 13th, 2007.
a poem by Ky Hote: George Harrison (1943-2001)
Isnt it a pity
Dont bother me while my guitar gently weeps
Its all too much living in the material world
If I needed someone, something, I need you
Give me love, give me peace on Earth
Hear me Lord, I dig Love
Beware of Darkness
Within you, without you, here comes the sun, my sweet Lord
All things must pass
What's it like being immersed in George Harrison music?
It's an amazing transformational journey. The Beatles were such groundbreakers with all their albums. John and Paul took on most of the upfront compositional work, but George quietly plugged along developing a style that it is both spiritual, whimsical and loving. Many of the people involved had been familiar with the Beatles catalog, but not so much his solo works. "I didn't know that was one of his songs," was heard often. Singing My Sweet Lord was an enlightening experience. Once you actually sing the song, you feel the real beauty in the chanting simplicity of the words and the power in the modulating arrangement and it truly becomes a prayer for everyone in the room.
Tributes to George Harrison's Friend Space (Top 39)
I am very much looking forward to Dec. 17th! Haven't heard from you in a bit but hoping I can still take part as promised! :) Much love to George . . .
Thank you for the add. The life is the music and the music, life. Only it is a question of putting harmony and to learn to live through it: LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, PEACE and ALWAYS MUSIC. Regards and my better musical desires
Worship Peace, what does that mean? If the Creator is Love and Love is Peace then Worship Peace. It is a simple concept. With this simple philosophy mankind can avoid warfare.
Peace doesn't care whom you Love; it consists entirely of Love for all. All are in the Creator and so the Creator dwells in the Created. Peace doesn't care who brought the message; it is the message that counts. Peace will not kill you over which messenger brought it to you. Peace will not die, for when all are gone only Peace will remain.
A book can be an Idol. A mound can be an idol. A city can be an idol. A man can be an idol. A church can be an idol. A kabba can be an idol. A cross can be an idol. When eyes are turned toward something other than Peace wars are started over whom or what holds the truth.
Thanks for inviting me to the tribute in NYC. Sorry I can't go--gotta work! grrrrrrrr!! But: ask me again and hopefully I will be able to come one of these times! (Fri/Sun are usually good) Hope you have fun!
Actually, the fact that you got any kind of response from me shows that I am enjoying myself quite alot lately. You gonna be in Kalamazoo the 21st of july? I'll be at silver leaf that day. Its my fucking birthday.
This page fucking sucks. There are no photos of me in it. What are you ashamed of my participation or just worried I would grab the spotlight from you?
HEY TRIBUTE TO GEORGE!
Do I have to pop your Comment cherry again! I thought breaking your hymen once was enough! Oh well! It was good for me! . . . . . .And?
