Tricyclic played their first show in January of 2001 at The Blue Chip in Monticello, Ia. The band was founded by Chris Tuetken with fellow pharmacy student Bill Cummings who played lead guitar. Chris convinced Bill to dust off his guitar and play a few open mic gigs at The Mill in Iowa City while they looked for a drummer and bass player. Gordon Lightfoot and Mike Freshwater soon were added as drummer and bass player. The original version of the group played mostly cover songs and even recorded three originals. They played several venues including The Green Room and The Que in Iowa City.
After graduating from pharmacy school in May of 2002 Chris and the rest of the guys parted ways. Chris eventually found Tanner Bronneman and David Herboldsheimer to play bass and drums. The second version of the group continued to experiment with original music but still remained mainly a cover band playing gigs in Monticello, Anamosa, Iowa City and even Waterloo. After a year or so of being a trio Eric Hagen joined the band as drummer, Alan Melville was brought on to play lead and Chris Hutchins played bass on and off with several other bass players including Joe Krucek and Johnny Russ. The third coming of the band still messed around with originals a bit but stuck mainly with the covers. This version of the band started playing the Fourth of July Parade in Monticello and the Freedom Festival Parade in Cedar Rapids. Other venues included Coctails and Company, 3rd Street Live and The Chrome Horse Saloon in Cedar Rapids.
The current lineup of the band includes Chris on lead vocals and bass/rhythm guitar, Alan on lead guitar, Dave on drums. Tricyclic continues to be mainly a cover band playing anything from the Beatles to Seether depending on the crowd.
