Three men, one dream: to put the 'show' back in show business. Trimmed Naval Beef is the pride of the Newfoundland suburbs (yes, such thing exists). Living in the burbs isn't always about soccer moms, ice cream trucks, and PTA meetings. No matter how bland it may seem, it's a place where musical creativity thrives behind a million two-car garages. A product of such suburban boredom is GoldStar, the debut album from Trimmed Naval Beef (released 2001, Independent).
In their super-hero disguises, TNB brandishes a cunning blend of top-notch musicianship and show-stopping buffoonery. Since their inception in 1997, the band has garnered rave reviews for their stage show from St. John's, NL to Ottawa, ON. They have shared the bill with bands such as David Usher, Finger Eleven, I Mother Earth, Snow and Shaggy. They have had a collaborative effort with a 20 piece jazz ensemble featuring arrangements of Trimmed Naval Beef material.
"GoldStar" is still enjoying radio play across the country. Other accolades include a #1 ranking on newmusiccanada.com, a MIANL (Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador) nomination for best alternative artist. Finalists in the sieved.com 2001 Sound Rounds. Quarterfinalist in CBC TV "Great Canadian Music Dream" Contest (selected to be in final 15 acts out of 475 in Atlantic Canada - 2002). Runner-up in CBC radio "Big Break" Contest (2002).
MEDIA QUOTES
"Awesome live, they are like the Beastie Boys on crack with an amazing jazz guitarist" -Matt Wells, Going Coastal - Much Music, January '03
"...TNB attacks with funk and hip hop vocals, an explosion of words and grooves." -Bob Mersereau, The New Brunswick Reader, Fredricton, NB, March '03
"There is a fine line, I have discovered, between musical genius and insanity, and TNB seems quite comfortable skating it each time they play - gleefully stepping off on each side with a devil-may-care attitude." -Mark Vaughan-Jackson, The Telegram, St. John's, NL, November '02
"Rhymes flow from the good reverend with purpose and he melds a sense with the 'non'. Professa Peebles makes his bass scream, sing and hum all at once and they have drums in spades when Orthopeedick kicks it." -P-Fo, Deadlygear.com, July '01
"These three musicians create a huge sound. The lyrical content varies on genius and ridiculous. In the rap tradition, the tracks center on one reiterated subject: TNB is cooler than you." -Chris Driedzic, Sieved.com, August '01
"All three, Orthopeedick Dave, Professa Peebles and Reverend Cornbread are proficient lyricists and multi-talented, multi-instrumented musicians." -Tara Thorne, Reverb Magazine, Halifax, NS, September '01
"They live up to their hype in front of a crowd of thousands at Mile One Stadium" -Adam Riggio, The Muse, St. John's, NL, October '01
"...a group called Trimmed Naval Beef has everyone talking. Wild costumes, great humor and music to match." -Gloria Hickey, ArtsBeat, CBC Morning Show, '98
"They were exactly what the crowd was looking for. Guys who can play their instruments well but still remind you of your favourite class clown from high school. TNB is worth the price of admission, the smoke that stays in your clothes for a week and all the sweat." -Kathleen Lippa, The Muse, St. John's, NL February '98
Fact:
Their name is taken from the traditional Newfoundland food of salt meat in a bucket of blood and brine.... mmmm tasty.
