Trio Loco was born when three orphaned malcontents of Eastern European descent were squabbling over who should play music at a prized location in the subway of Budapest. In lightening response to a potential ‘situation’, Mark Dziuba, thinking what a groove it would be to have a bass and vocal to accompany his guitar, and Studio Stu, amazed that any real musician would want to play with a washtub bass to begin with, and percussionist extrodinaire Dean Sharp looking for an evocative melody decided to share the spot. “ This sure seems like a crazy trio.” someone said.
This eccentric jazz trio takes the very best in classic jazz and originals, and twists and bends them into what they call ‘evocative jass, exotic lounge’. In this ‘trio virtuosi’, nothing is sacred.....improv is rampant...lyrics are changed at will...notes and chords are bent and perverted...familiar languages are obliterated....harmonies are sweet and sour perfection......tunes are put through a fun house mirror, and yet, serious, sophisticated and uncompromising in execution. The union is one in-tune, out-of-tune, offbeat outfit.
Mark Dziuba, guitar wizard and director of jazz studies at SUNY New Paltz, moves with grace through impossible chord changes and rapid fire riffs on his, vintage guitars transforming these classic tunes into something more....a sort of ‘light shift’ in tone and nuance, going beyond the music's original intent. And, as a composer, he brings a fresh, complex virtuosity to a seemingly inexhaustible genre.
Studio Stu, with his state-of-the-art Mancuso Single String Bass, unique Brooklyn humor, and unusual, hypnotic vocals, is a master...a one string wonder, combining a traditional folk instrument and a classic music form, to create a third thing (one we haven’t quite figured out what to call yet).....fearless in delivery and willing to navigate uncharted paths through the improvisational wilderness; he is ‘el ultimo hombre del lounge’.
Master percussionist Dean Sharp is the wiring of this telepathetic ensemble, connecting and enabling the flow of the exotic and extreme...he is the man with relentless drive, bathing the audience in a never ending flow of exotic beats, off tempo tempos, odd percussion, and melodic ingenuity, transforming the ensemble through profound, eclectic and provocative rhythms.
So, hold on to your limbs, they are still together, still in love, and ready to wreck havoc at a venue near you. Trio Loco is perfect if you are looking for unstandards, improvisation, and general jazz maniacs to make your life better.....that’s right, seeing this ensemble will actually improve on your very drab, boring, everyday, wanna-be life....so don’t delay, see Trio Loco, today.
