The year is 1982. Vinnie Vincent replaces Ace Frehley in KISS. Creatures of The Night is released in October. Magic Johnson's Los Angeles Lakers defeat Dr. J's Philadelphia 76ers to win their second of five NBA championships that
decade. Lucio Fulci directs his misogynistic giallo masterpiece The New York Ripper. Future NBA star Kwame Brown is born in Charleston, South Carolina. On the other side of the world, in Melbourne's picturesque bayside suburb of Black Rock, a future MBA star and soon-to-be child model is born. That soon-to-be child model was me, and by the early age of 4 I was on K-Mart catalogues & shopping centre catwalks citywide, but by 1988 my career had burned out like so many child stars before and fame was but a distant memory (one which I don't actually have much of). Raised in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs of Murrumbeena & East Bentleigh, a fascination with the local buses running between Southland & Chadstone shopping centres developed very early at a rapid pace, along with my aspirations of someday becoming one of the bus drivers I had so successfully been building a rapport with as one of their favourite passengers.
Growing up, I would go through phases of obsessing over things I discovered I was interested in or liked. Be it buses, police cars thanks to The Blues Brothers, Bedknobs & Broomsticks and Angela Lansbury, Beverly Hills Cop, detective work mainly thanks to Columbo, or NBA basketball, I would take it to the extreme and that interest would be the focal point of my life at that time. At one point I collected bus tickets and would make cardboard models of my favourites buses. Later, I dressed like a detective and if I saw something out of the ordinary in my neighbourhood, I would try to investigate it. At one point I wouldn't leave home without a basketball and would dress head to toe in Magic Johnson gear. Though the focus of my obsessing would shift in phases, these fascinations have stuck with me until today, with the exception of my bus driving aspirations.
One such fascination began when my dad, previously a manager of drive-in & indepedent cinemas around Canberra & Melbourne, rented me Tobe Hooper's grindhouse classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) as a movie I just had to see. That was it. His recommendations led me to my all time favourite films such as Death Wish (1974), Martin Scorcese's awesome Taxi Driver (1976) and overlooked black comedy After Hours (1985), and most notably, the films of Italian horror maestro Dario Argento which introduced me to my favourite genre of film - the 'giallo' - which combined viciously stylish horror and violence with that classic '70s mystery & detective element I had earlier fallen in love with through Columbo. I developed an obsession with horror, exploitation & revenge/vigilante films, every week hiring (and eventually collecting the ex-rentals of) films such as Joel M. Reed's sleazefest Bloodsucking Freaks (1976), Meir Zarchi's controversial rape-revenge romp I Spit On Your Grave (1978), Antonio Margheriti's Cannibal Apocalypse (1980), the heavily cut video of the gore-drenched slasher Maniac (1980), Frank Henenloter's seedy New York City comedy-horror Basket Case (1982) and the excellent shockumentary The Killing Of America (1981) to name a few that stick out as memorable discoveries from my teen years.
The fascination only grew stronger when I stumbled across a special edition of one of dad's movie magazines dedicated to the UK "Video Nasty" fiasco and my most desired films to see became the banned in Australia (at the time) films such as Lucio Fulci's exercise in misogyny that is The New York Ripper (1982), Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust (1979), Sergio Garrone's SS Experiment Love Camp (1976, still banned) and Wes Craven's influencial rape-revenge tale Last House On The Left (1972). This obsession led to my choice of uni course as Screen Studies for three years. Later, I would stumble across a character named Nick at my work who I'd heard through another colleague was into Dario Argento, and quickly found out that he was an expert on banned and censored films and Italian exploitation cinema, and also had an uncut DVD of Fulci's The New York Ripper which I had been dying to see! Not only was I finally able to see that film among others, as well as being introduced to other films I had never heard about (such as the works of infamous smut merchant Joe D'Amato), but our Friday night "Smutfests" also led to me finding my new home in the inner-city bayside suburb of St Kilda, where I had wanted to live for a long time. Since the explosion of DVD making obscure titles available and resulting in video stores selling off their VHS stock, I began collecting ex-rental VHS tapes (though the good stuff has dried up) with a particular interest in having the cut VHS releases of video nasties as a piece of exploitation history to accompany the uncut DVDs we are now able to order. My obsession with all forms of exploitation cinema has only grown stronger and given me the goal that someday I'd love to open a small, sleazy grindhouse cinema dedicated to screening old exploitation films in double features.
Dad was also responsible for another fascination I developed. It was February 13th, 1997. I was 14 years old and dad took me to see KISS on their reunion tour at Melbourne Park. From the time that curtain dropped and Paul, Gene, Ace & Peter delivered what was the most explosive experience I had ever witnessed, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to do that. Music, and KISS, became an obsession. I almost immediately started playing guitar (learning mainly from KISS' back catalogue), collecting everything I could find relating to KISS, rediscovering the bands I had listened to as a kid such as Bon Jovi (my favourite band as a kid) and Def Leppard, and bought a record player to buy cheap secondhand vinyl so I could try out every other glam or melodic style hard rock and metal band I could find records of.
One night when I was 19 and out seeing a heavy metal cover band, I struck up conversation with someone who was taken by my enthusiasm for glam & melodic rock and introduced me to hundreds of new AOR bands I had never heard. This person was Julez, the singer of Melbourne glam band The Deadthings who had just hit the scene, and after becoming close friends with Julez & the band, Julez called me up while at a "Smutfest" with Nick, telling me that their bassist had left the band and asked if I wanted to switch to bass and become The Deadthings' new bass player. It was an easy choice and I have since had the opportunity to open for bands such as LA Guns, Pretty Boy Floyd, Lynch Mob, Faster Pussycat, Crucified Barbara and The 69 Eyes among others.
In addition to being the resident "Bass Player n Virgin Slayer" in The Deadthings alongside Julez Mephisto, Leigh Van Hell, Dave Scythe and my housemate Nick Caligula, myself along with Julez and Nick also play in Melbourne's new AOR sensation White Widdow with two-time Aria nominee Xavier Mephisto (Weapon X) stabbing the keys and the absolutely amazing Enzo Almanzi (previously of X-Halen) on guitar. Check out the White Widdow MySpace for samples from our new free-download EP!
In addition to White Widdow and The Deadthings, I also moonlight as "Bobby Dall" in the Australian Poison tribute show Poisoned, occasionally play the odd show for the Kiss Army Australia 'All Star' Band along with Matt (ex-Kisstroyer), Paul (ex-Virgin Soldiers) and Enzo from White Widdow, and in 2007 I filled in on bass for two shows with Sunset Strip glam icons Tuff from Los Angeles, and also opened for them in The Deadthings the same nights. See the Calendar for all upcoming dates for gigs I may be playing.
People who know me will tell you that I love a drink or two and love eating anything greasy & deep fried. I like going out with close friends (you'll usually find me out locally around St Kilda), watching DVDs & videos, collecting ex-rental VHS, following NBA & the Lakers, seeing movies St Kilda's Astor Theatre, playing basketball on Mondays in our new team Vice, playing NBA 2K8, listening to an overload of
keyboard laden melodic rock, and oversleeping whenever I can.
I love to travel & am dying to do more of it. I had the best time of my life in 2006 when The Deadthings toured in the USA playing shows around the LA area at venues such as The Whisky A Go Go! We had an awesome road trip to Las Vegas, saw the Cathouse 20th Anniversary show with a heap of great bands, bought a Compton hat for $3 that I sold back here for $100, fell in love with Del Taco and Jack In The Box, we made the front cover of Rock City News, went to Mexico for a day, and met a bunch of really cool people on the trip. Can't wait to get back over there and check out alot more of the country (especially Detroit) and buy myself a 1974 Dodge Monaco to ship back to Australia, paint black and white and put a Mt Prospect police badge on the doors!
I also went over to Europe last year and spent time in England, Holland, Denmark, Germany & Italy and had a blast over there as well, seeing a whole lot of awesome bands live such as Danger Danger, Pink Cream 69, Pretty Maids, Scorpions, White Sister, Tigertailz, Valentine, Mitch Malloy, Firehouse, HEAT, Paul Laine, Tyketto among others and caught a night-train on the same route as the one in Aldo Lado's excellent 1975 Italian rape-revenge film Night Train Murders!
Who I'd like to meet:
Paul Stanley, Joe D'Amato, Lieutenant Columbo, Basil Fawlty, Pam Grier, Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner, Olaf, and the family from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!
