“Near the so called court of the seven fairies, close to the ancient monastery of Saint Clair, from somewhere came seven women , each of them more beautiful than the other, bringing along some men and some women, whom they showed never seen things: dances, sounds, banquets .
And they also brought them above the sea, far and away, and they let them walk on water without getting wet. Everynight they repeated all this, and in the morning they left leaving no trace behind.”
(Giuseppe Pitrè, sicilian anthropologist)
In the popular traditions and stories, these characters, also addressed as Women of the land, Women of the night, Landlords, hold within characteristics of both fairies and witches, by so embodying the union of what have been considered in western civilization as distinct and opposite forces. They have a calling for the care of homes and children, towards whom they are full of attentions. In some parts of Sicily, the so called trizzi ri donna are the inextricable pigtails that these women give the children by caressing their hair and singing them a lullaby: it is the sign of their protection and benevolence.
Protectors of the homes, healers, matrons, good and bad fortune bringers, they sometimes assume animal form, or become wind, or invisible funny and spiteful; how can we not see the resembles of these beings with all those of the Mediterranean mythology?
In these Sicilian Women of the land , we can see the merging of the Celtic culture, Greek and pre-Greek tradition, they are the heritage of an ancient cult to the Great Goddess, on a storytelling and mythological plane they represent the link of Women to the forces of nature, the inviolated casket of an ancient knowledge.
Saving in our imagination the image of the Women of the land, we want to confer to our work this link to the earth, the possibility through dance, songs and music to reconcile opposite aspects finding balance respecting differences.
Our group rises from an experience developed over time, that has seen in dancing a strong potential, regarding, in the first place, the need for a direct and intuitive communication between participants, then the expressive skill whose story walks together with the history of mankind.
Thanks to our acquired experience, we’ve reached the conception of a performance as a moment of exchange and sharing, in which elements of dance, music and chants condition and complete each other being an harmonic and undividable trio. The common goal is so discovered in the primordial joy of group movement, in the sense of a collective participation, in the creative possibility of a moment of gathering.
The repertoire of dances and songs travels from the Balcanic area to the Middle east, from Italy to Scotland, passing through the Provence and also chasing the steps of Gipsy dances that cross the Mediterranean area from one end to another.
