Described by some kid who was hanging out in the park as "Rock and Alt-Country" with influences ranging between folk and punk, (think Wilco to Pogues, Ween to whatever) wrapped around tongue-in-cheek lyrics, the story of the band known as Trophy Wife is a unique one.
Who would have ever thought that a chance meeting between three students at the San Diego School of Pottery and Interpretive Dance, would turn into one of San Diego's most unique and interesting bands? I did. I knew it and I told people, lots of people. Strangers on the bus. Kids in the mall. The sullen. Trophy Wife released a 4-song EP in 2004 and followed with their first full-length release, "Kissing Hands and Shaking Babies" a year later. Culled from the ashes of several local bands in San Diego, the members of Trophy Wife formed in 2004 with specific goals in mind.
"We wanted to play songs", says guitarist Steve Szabo. "For people", added bassist Matt Nelson, who moved down from Seattle in 2003 specifically to join the band, or to run from his sadness. Obviously an insightful band. Trophy Wife began playing locally with such national acts as The National, Ben Taylor, Flogging Molly, and The Rugburns.
Trophy Wife released their third CD, "Rose-Scented Cuddle Moments" in January 2008 after adding drummer (and child chess protege) Jason Lewis to the band, and have been playing select shows while writing and rehearsing new material. "Its definitely my favorite Trophy Wife album", says Joe MacAskill. "Its great to write about lost loves, missed opportunities, various arrests and hide them under the veil of a song." "I left my heart on the studio floor. If you find it I would like it back. I may need it one day". "The studio can be a tricky process with lots of decision-making", added Nelson. "Just the other day, we had to decide between pizza and Mexican food. Its decisions like that many bands don't recover from. Thank God I'm better looking then the rest of the guys, and that's how we make our decisions. Oh, and I chose fish."
