  • Bio

Trout and Parrot is Alex Stephens (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Jillian Secor (guitar, vocals). Their whiskey-soaked folk/bluegrass songs take listeners back to simpler times and portray a rawness that embodies the pioneer spirit of the Wild West. In a style similar to Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and David Rawlings, this up-and-coming duo combines sincere energy and beautiful melodies to push folk music to the edge. They have an amazingly full sound, thanks to Jillian's powerful voice and Alex's intricate mandolin. Jillian (Parrot) was born to be a performer. She began developing her stunning voice by singing hymns as a youngster. At the age of 16, she became a quarter-finalist in the third season of television’s American Idol. She began writing songs on the guitar just after high school. Jillian completed the rigorous musical theater program at Webster University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in May 2009. She is in the process of adding claw-hammer banjo to her arsenal of musical talents. Her tendency to wear bright colors and her powerful belt earned her the character name ‘Parrot.’ Alex (Trout) also got into music at a very early age, picking up the guitar and performing at talent shows at the age of ten. He formed a band as a freshman in high school that would last through college. Playing lead guitar for this aggressive punk band was where he began experimenting with quickly improvised melodies. His love of Irish and bluegrass music prompted him to pick up the mandolin a few years ago. Jam music influences are prominent in his mandolin playing, which has evolved to complement Jillian's vocals magnificently. He was nicknamed ‘Trout’ for his calm and steady manner, as well as his fondness for fly-fishing. The masterful songwriting exhibited on their first album "Headin' West" is a cause to pay close attention to Trout and Parrot and place high expectations for their next release. The musical growth portrayed on the follow-up album will include more extensive vocal harmonies and darker themes. More guest performances will be featured to broaden the scope of musical instruments in the recordings – including the accordion, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and cello.
